Officials warn: Cuts would be dead-serious for zoos(MA)
Boston Herald ^ | July 11, 2009 | Dave Wedge

The state’s zoos may be shuttered and lions, giraffes, apes and other exotic animals could land on a furry death row if devastating funding cuts proposed by Gov. Deval Patrick go through, alarmed officials warned.

The governor’s proposed $4 million whack would shut down Dorchester’s Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo in Stoneham, Zoo New England boss John Linehan told the Legislature in a no-nonsense letter this week.

Worse yet, he warned, officials could have to unleash a tragic string of mercy killings because it would be impossible to find new homes for all 1,000 of the zoos’ fuzzy friends.

If a few zoos have to close, so be it. They are not an essential government function.

My family went to Stone Zoo recently and was disappointed with how little there was to see. If it closed, we would not miss it.

Hey, set the animals free and you won’t have to kill them (cut to images of tigers, gorillas, and coyotes walking the streets of Mass. towns—hey wait, we already DO have
coyotes here, killing cats...we already do have the odd
deer etc. roaming through some neighborhoods...)

And we’ll all just buy pit bulls to protect us :)

Always said zoos should be outlawed. Prefer to stuff'em...Lasts forever and no food, no noise, no cages. And no maintenance except maybe a vacumm and a shot of Febreeze.

Zoos are no longer for the publiuc....they're just breeding centers...

P U L E E Z E ! Already!

Can’t cut budgets or all the furry criters will be euthanized. How about the same treatment for politicians who can’t seem to be responsible with the money we earn and, for some stupid reason, entrust to them to spend wisely?

Maybe then they will start listening when the voters form of political euthanasia is their vote being cast for someone who will.

Does Massachusetts taxpayers subsidize or pay for abortions through its healthcare system?

“lions, giraffes, apes and other exotic animals”?
Always wondered what these would taste like cooked on my Big Green Egg.
Now as for those baby manatee steaks.

Let the kids tour congress. The critters contained within are much more stupid, much less moral, and a great less traveled along the evolutionary ladder than lions, tigers, and bears.

I cannot believe the fear tactics in this article. It's right out of a government playbook and it's downright goofy.

I remember coming to this realization years ago, when I did a lot of work for the state of California throughout Sacramento. They were always whining about budget shortfalls and threatening to have to lay off the most visible and necessary people like cops and firefighters, while I would be seeing legions of paper shuffling bureaucrats, some taking naps at their desks.

Typical of Massachusetts scare tactics, of course, but if they really wanted to get someone’s attention they’d just tell folks they were going to TURN THE ANIMALS LOOSE.
