After months on the fence, U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer, D-Battle Creek, voted in favor of the American Clean Energy and Security Act on Friday that he says will create jobs, reduce dependence on foreign oil and reduce pollution. Republicans say it will destroy jobs, increase our energy bills and is a ticket home for centrist Democrats in the 2010 Congressional elections.
Schauer said the bill will help in the investment in clean and renewable energy sources, and will create about 3,600 jobs in the 7th district.
"My top priority as a member of Congress is to fight for Michigan jobs, and this bill will help put our people back to work," Schauer said in a statement. "After careful review, I worked to address the concerns raised by my constituents and fought to improve the legislation. As a result, I am confident that this is the jumpstart we need to turn Michigan's economy around and help break our dependence on foreign oil."
The CBO estimates say this will cost the average household an additional $14.60 a month.

The National Republican Congressional Committee called Schauer, Nancy Pelosi's "puppet," and are trying to paint him as a flip-flopper.
The NRCC's statement quotes an April article in Politico in which Schauer said he was undecided on the bill and couldn't support it in its current form.
"Mark Schauer led Michigan voters to believe that they actually had a representative in Congress fighting against higher energy costs and spiking unemployment," NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain said in a statement. "Unfortunately, Schauer once again bowed to his party bosses at the expense of middle-class families. Now, the people of Michigan will have to foot the bill for Nancy Pelosi's arm-twisting and Mark Schauer's stunning lack of principle."

And a big Bronx Cheer of a thanks to the national party for abandoning Tim Walberg, who would have survived if he had any help. He was abandoned and Schauer won with a whopping 48% or so. It makes me sick. It's a little too late for the NRCC. With even minimum effort, we would have at least saved one vote on this bill since I know for a fact that Tim would not vote for this.
Tim Walberg made the mistake of opposing the RINOcrats on the big bank bailout while vulnerable. He certainly wasn’t the lost cause they made him out to be.
Just watch. The GOP will recycle that scumbag Schwarz and expect us to vote for it.
Go after the 40 weak Democrats and put good republicans in their palce. The economy in MI will still be in the dumper next year and each one of those MI,PA or OH seats will look good with an R next to the congressman’s name.

There’s a poll at the site too. Don’t let the numbers fool you. The 7th district is fairly conservative. The comments are interesting as well.
The bill will not;
-create jobs
-create energy
-stimulate the economy
-clean the environment
-change the global temperature!

I’m just a bit fuzzy on just how this “bill” reduces the US dependence on foreign oil. Just once, I’d like to hear the plan from Congress on how this will occur. Oh, wait, our taxes go soo high that we no longer use any energy and we all start a home rickshaw business.
