Recession Special: Wine Cheaper Than Water!
CNBC ^ | 7/6/2009 | Staff

Well, pour yourself a glass of vino to go with that lobster tail tonight because wine prices have fallen so much, winemakers in Australia are complaining that wine is now cheaper than some bottled water.

WATER!

Dan Murphy, a major wine-retail chain in Australia, is currently selling cleanskins, bottles of wine without a label that are usually sold in a case, for 1.99 Australian dollars, or about $1.60, the Sunday Mail reports.

That’s less than half of what wine cost 10 years ago, the New York Times reported.

“Australia can’t even bottle air and make money selling at that price,” Jeremy Oliver, an Australian winemaker and critic, is quoted as saying in the Times. “The industry is in crisis.”

Two Buck Chuck is still $1.99 in California. It's actually the only reason for living in this state that I can think of. Well, grandkids might also be in that category.

How does it taste?

I do like the aussi wine in a box.

People poo poo the boxes, but it keeps very well , nitrogen packed .

You can't post this without posting the requirements for emigration.

Reminds me of that song "Rainbow Stew" (Merle Haggard).

Two Buck Chuck tastes fine to me. But then again I have a philosophy about wine that is anathema to most wine lovers. The philosophy in a nutshell: Never, ever, ever learn to appreciate good wine. It costs so much more than the cheap stuff that you are better off being an ignoramus (that’s a Gore-like creature) on the subject of wine. After all if you “appreciate” the cheap stuff why would you want to move “up” to the pricey wines. Makes no sense. Stick with Two Buck Chuck and when offered some really good wine just turn it down like you would a syringe full of heroin. Don’t get hooked on good wine. As Nancy taught us: Just Say No (I’ll stick with the cheap stuff).

*That’s the Spirit* alcoholic beverage ping!

Go to Australia for *really* cheap, good wine! And it’s winter there, too, which wouldn’t be bad if you live in a hot state ...

So go plant some. Vineyards take longer to mature, but barley grows pretty fast. Malt some, add water and yeast, and watch the first miracle that Our Lord did.

I'm all for receiving the gifts we have been given. The effect of yeast on converted sugars is proof that God loves us, and wants us to be happy. ;)

Sweet Bubble Up is only a harvest away.

Texas, Oklahoma, Florida. My parents in Florida and my friends in the hot central US are griping massively. My friends in Alaska say it’s in the 50s and they’re dying of the heat!

Coolish for this time of year in NC.

To be sure! Since I have a baby, everything is perfectly giddy as long as I get a nap every couple of days and remember to eat. (If not, I start crying and threaten to give up housecleaning!)
