Most “ultra-orthodox” (whatever that means) would agree with your statement.

“UOJ arent drafted.”
Actually, they are. They seek (and generally obtain) deferment. Slight distinction.

I don’t believe the Druze are drafted, but they do have 100% volunteer rates.
(This may have changed, in that they were petitioning to be subject to consciption.)

“Do folks resent that the UOJ not carring their weight in the IDF? They have no losses from fighting, etc?”
The bigger issue, IMHO, is the Shas party desire for welfare.
There are observant units, and they are some of the finest.

"Jerusalem is not Teheran."We'll see what king barry 0 has to say about that. He's already promised Jerusalem to his fellow believers in mohammed.

So let me get this straight:
Haredi Jews imposing their beliefs on you by wanting to keep their neighborhoods free of the sounds of traffic on Shabbat = Bad.
You wanting to impose your beliefs on the Haredi by wanting to drive your car through their neighborhoods and disrupt their Sabbath peace = Good.
Glad we cleared that up.
Shalom.

Which one; Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Samaritanism, or Zoroastrianism? Christianity is not mid-eastern.

Who is driving through their streets? No one.
On the other hand, they have shut down Public Transport ALL over Jerusalem including the Christian Quarter.
Who is harassing whom now?

Christianity is not mid-eastern.
Oh really? Where exactly do you think it came from?

I do not EVER want to live in a world where religious rules are imposed.
Most “rules” have emerged from judaeo Christian teachings-—in this country mainly Christian.
It is the secularists/atheists who are attempting to rid all those rules that defines what it means be human. Everywhere they have tried it man has reverted to savagery. This country is getting closer to that model by the minute. Some say we are already living in that stink.

Observant, as in “observe the customs and laws of Judaism.”
The Secular/Reform/Conservative/Orthodox movements in the United States are not quite parallel in Israel.
You have “schools” and you have levels of observance of the mitzvahs.
An “observant” unit could be a supply unit or it could be commandos.

“Haredi Jews imposing their beliefs on you by wanting to keep their neighborhoods free of the sounds of traffic on Shabbat “
That’s the excuse; it’s generally coupled with the allegation that the secular Jews are a corrupting influence.
IMHO, the real issue is the Haredi are very upset that many of the Jewish residents are non-observant.
I understand their displeasure, but again, I don’t think they are utilizing the correct method of persuasion.

So they’re going to pack up all their churches and leave Israel? Wow.

Christianity is not mid-eastern.
Is that a joke? Are you suggesting that Jesus was born in Britannia and Paul took a road trip to Colon Augusta?

Believe me, I understand the frustration with the Haredi. I had one try to sell me a blessing at the Western Wall last year and haggle on the price. I can also understand why those who work for a living get annoyed at those who get a government stipend to sit around and be "holy."
My comment had more to do with the intrinsic hypocrisy of those who want to impose a "no religion should impose its rules" rule on others, and an appreciation for those who don't want to secular world barging in on their communities.
Shalom.

I'm not arguing the specific details of the case. I'm pointing out your double-standard: You think you have the right to impose a rule on the religious that "no religion should impose its rules on others." Why not? The secular impose their rules on the religious all the time, as do Christians on Jews: I can't buy a bottle of Meneschewitz on Sunday, for example.
The Haredi have just as much right to "impose" as anyone else.
Rioting, on the other hand . . .
Shalom.

No... no double standard here...
Read my previous posts. Living in Texas, I loathe the blue laws. I can’t buy a beer before noon on Sunday. It is ridiculous.
Blue Laws in the US were hated for precisely that reason. They imposed one group of people’s values on everyone else. Slowly but steadily these laws are dissapearing and thankfully so.
