The Nantucket Tea Party will be one of more than a thousand such protest events to be held across the nation on Independence Day.
The organizers were all set. They were given permission by the Town’s head of Park and Recreation. After the local paper publicized the event, some members of the Nantucket Park and Recreation Commission decided to forget about the First Amendment. One local official was quoted as saying “we don’t want politics on Main Street.” Apparently the head of Park and Recreation was overruled by the commissioners.
The Nantucket Tea Party then got permission to use a bank’s private property. A Town official then advised the Nantucket Tea Party that the Tea Party must obtain a permit to block the sidewalk — even though the street is closed! The Nantucket Tea Party got the Police, Fire and Public Works departments sign off on the event, but the Park and Recreation department balked.
Now the Nantucket Tea Party has been restricted to the steps of a bank. The town government will not allow the Nantucket Tea Party to be part of the Independence Day celebration on Main Street as had been planned.
Nantucket’s heavy handed attempt to quash the Nantucket Tea Party is a sad commentary on what too many so-called leaders in this country think about freedom and our rights.

I agree with your general premiss that is the situation should be decided in the favor of the demonstrators, however, since you say “depending on whom it gets decided before” brings forth another problem: this should be a non political slam dunk...freedom of assembly!

I agree with what you are saying. It is a fact, however, many on the bench are ideologues.
Nantucket has become the private preserve of the liberal Eastern mega rich. They have priced out the original residents and not wanting your Tea Party is part of their feeling they are so special they need not allow anything they don’t like within their sight. They believe in money and its power, not God and our Constitution. The peasants are one earth to serve them, not inconvenience them.
We conservatives may have to have another American Revolution to restore the country as created in 1776 and when the Constitution was enacted.

Think of all those breathtakingly rich trust funded “progressives” having heart attacks upon seeing contempt for The Great Hussein being displayed right there on Main Street in Nantucket.....the summer playground of some of the most *compassionate* people on earth!
...And this is exactly when you execute a bit of civil disobedience.
Next time get and keep real good documentation, it is your Rights we’re talking about for God’s sake!

About 300 people were present. We were very fortunate to have Sec. James Nicholson, retired U.S. Army colonel, former U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, former head of the Republican National Committee and former Secretary of Veteran’s Affairs, address a good crowd on a beautiful day. What an honor for me to be able to introduce such a great man!

Little do the local governments across the country realize the feelings against them that are simmering among people.
Personally, they would have arrested me for handing out flyers, speaking to people, or even had taken my soapbox to the parade and read the Declaration of Independence of July 4th, 2009. But I would have tolerated the arrest to push the limits.
We couldn't get into our parade, but we were told we could work the sidewalks all we wanted and even the park tonight.
But as long as we're willing to be pigeon holed there will be no changes.

Listen Newbie, watch who you insult. My comments were a characterization of the Nantucket Board Of Selectmen's probable reasoning for not permitting the demonstration, not my own beliefs. I lived on Nantucket for 20+ years, did 7+ years in the Army and 3+ years in Iraq so I think I'm quite qualified to opine on Nantucket and patriotism.
Being new, inaccurate and insulting won't get you far on this site.
My reference was to the given statement as justification. Using that on the most political day in our countries history. I was not trying to insult your statement. I know you were stating what you thought was his justification. I also believe I have a right to opine!! BTW I do not live very far from Nantucket!!
