JOSEPH Massad's schol arly contribution during his decade as a faculty member of Columbia University's Middle East Studies Department may be summed up as follows: Israel is racist, and homosexuality is an insidious Western invention.

Yet that was enough for Columbia, which officially -- if quietly -- awarded Massad tenure earlier this month.

Columbia's process for reviewing tenure candidates is as rigorous as any Ivy League school's. Ordinarily, an academic of Massad's caliber would be bounced from Morningside Heights. And in fact, the system did work -- it denied Massad tenure two years ago.

But now the school's academic standards have succumbed to ideological tensions and campus politics -- in what appears to be a remarkable manipulation of the tenure process and a breach of fiduciary trust.

First, a little background on Massad.

A Christian secularist of Palestinian-Arab descent, Massad has dedicated his academic career primarily to encouraging the destruction of Israel as a Jewish state. Criticism of Israel is far from unusual in his field, but Massad goes much further, taking arguments to bizarre ends. "The ultimate achievement of Israel," he writes, is "the transformation of the Jew into the anti-Semite, and the Palestinian into the Jew." In a book, he rails against the "Zionist theft of Palestinian Arab food (e.g., hummus, falafel)."

Columbia is an Israel-basher...that is, when they're not after the USA; a leftist, intellectual cesspool.

The once fine Columbia University has abandoned scholarship and has become a home for historical revisionist and racism. This tenure comes as part of a line of such tenure travesties at the University. Columbia was where the hateful Edward Said spewed propaganda instead of scholarship and spawned a generation of anti-Semitic propagandists who now fill universities across America. When Obma, who promised transparency in his administration but insisted all his college records be sealed, was a disciple of Edward Said, teacher and promoter of Middle East terrorists.

A $250,000 donation the university accepted from an unnamed Saudi Arabian was only disclosed after The New York Sun reported that Columbia had filed its foreign donation reports more than five months late.

The same year, the government of the United Arab Emirates contributed $200,000 to a $3 million academic chair named in honor of the late comparative literature professor Edward Said. Columbia originally concealed the list of donors funding the Middle East Studies professorship, which is now held by Rashid Khalidi.

I think the Columbia administration caved because they got the Islamic equivilent of the Mexican drug lords offer to police: “Plata o Plomo?” Silver or Lead (meaning bullets)

They have accepted generos donations from Arab sources and may well have been threatend by campus violence is they didn’t cave in.
