Obama pressures Senate on climate change measure

WASHINGTON – Hailing the House, President Barack Obama put pressure on senators Saturday to follow its lead and pass legislation to limit greenhouse gas emissions, helping usher the U.S. into a new age of energy efficiency.

"Now my call to every senator, as well as to every American, is this: We cannot be afraid of the future. And we must not be prisoners of the past," the president said in his weekly radio and Internet address. "Don't believe the misinformation out there that suggests there is somehow a contradiction between investing in clean energy and economic growth. It's just not true."

The legislation, which the House narrowly approved Friday night, would place the first national limits on emissions of greenhouse gases from major sources — such as power plants, factories and oil refineries — to reduce the gases linked to global climate change. ...

The potential impact on people's daily lives is great. If the proposal, which faces an uncertain fate in the Senate, were to become law, it could make it more expensive for people to heat, cool and light their homes; mean more smaller, fuel efficient and hybrid electric cars; and create more "green" jobs, or environmentally friendly ones. Windmills and solar panels might replace smokestacks.

Sorry Baracko! The natives are restless after being betrayed yesterday. Your garbage is going down in the Senate. There is going to be hell to pay in 2010. All the ACORNS and unions in the world won’t be able to stop it!

Is there any chance this madness can be stopped. We will be a third world country if this insanity is allowed to go on.

“But Obama said the measure would cost the average American about the price of a postage stamp per day.”

Well, that let’s the cat out of the bag. Get ready, the price of a postage is going to be 10 bucks.

"My friends, despite what CNN and the rest are telling you, Barack Obama is nothing more than an old school African Colonial who is on his way to turning this country into one of the developing nations that you learn about on the National Geographic Channel. Many conservative (East, West, South, North) African-Americans like myself -- those of us who know our history -- have seen this movie before. ...... "

We cannot be afraid of the future.

We can be like the Ostrich and bury our head in the sand and take federal intravenous feeding for survival instead.

Me thinks too many in government took "The Matrix" WAY too seriously.

Will someone please send a copy of the ice core curves to BOzo. For the last 400K years this sequence of the earth's heating and cooling cycles have been true. So in the next 50 years the ice caps are going to melt?

We will be a third world country if this insanity is allowed to go on.

We will have a useless piece of paper for direction if this passes and continues our trek to serfdom via government.

The lackadaisical attitude of some with this legislation is very concerning.

Apparently way too many want to live without freedom from oppression.

Stupid question...and I'll post it here and elsewhere instead of starting a vanity thread...

What prevents other countries from bidding up the price of a carbon credit, to the point that we cannot afford our own energy, and our industries cannot compete with imported manufactured goods?

What if China simultaneously dumps all of their treasury notes and trades them for American carbon credits? What then?

That’s a good question about carbon credits. I don’t know the details, but I thought the carbon credit market was supposed to work like the stock market. Companies who meet and exceed the carbon limits in their operations can then sell their unused credits to others who exceed the carbon limits. And the market is supposed to set the price for these credits. These credits sound to me like a tax or fee for emitting too much carbon. If those who emit too much have to buy a credit for same on the open market, you’re right, the market will determine the price of the credit. I think it’s quite possible that China or others outside America will enter our carbon credit market and treat them as an investment. And their being there will affect the supply and demand for the credits, and thus the price.

Let’s hope that the Senate will save us from all this nonsense and fail to pass this global warming bill.
