U.S. reverses Afghan drug policy, eyes August vote

* U.S. to phase out poppy eradication

* Wants to avoid questions over Afghan vote

* Seeks more aid for Pakistan

RIESTE, Italy, June 27 (Reuters) - Washington is to dramatically overhaul its Afghan anti-drug strategy, phasing out opium poppy eradication, the U.S. envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan told allies on Saturday.

Richard Holbrooke, attending a G8 conference on stabilising Afghanistan, also discussed efforts to support its Aug. 20 election. Washington has nearly doubled its troops to combat a growing Taliban insurgency and provide security for the vote.

"The Western policies against the opium crop, the poppy crop, have been a failure. They did not result in any damage to the Taliban, but they put farmers out of work," Holbrooke told Reuters after a series of bilateral meetings in Italy.

"We are not going to support crop eradication. We're going to phase it out," he said. The emphasis would instead be on intercepting drugs and chemicals used to make them, and going after drug lords.

Is anyone surprised the One is doing this? Not me. This is just another script in his play book to destroy this country and give it away to evil that is becoming more and more happy with his actions.

Going after the heroin addict vote.
There’s no group too small nor perverted for him to pander to...

Good. Let the Afghanis take care of that problem themselves. We could bring our troops home & place them on OUR borders rather than interfering in the internal politics of other sovereign nations. The same goes for Korea, Iraq, & Europe, too.

I don’t approve of this, but I must say that the opium poppy eradication program has never seemed to work. Which is not to say that this new policy is right, but that the old policy needed some fixing.

I sometimes have wondered if ANY of our government authorities or agencies really want to get rid of drugs—or, all to often, just the small dealers who don’t make the right payoffs.

With the recession many parents have had to reduce or eliminate allowances for their kids. Cheap, affordable heroin should make things easier on the family’s budget.

Another example of the Democrat’s concern for Americas’s youth.

I imagine Baracko sees a big jump in heroin sales once all of the freeloaders land one of his unionized, goverment “green” jobs paid for by his largest tax increase in U.S. history. The taxpayers will be paying the addicts and we won’t be able to fire them.

“We could bring our troops home & place them on OUR borders..”

What?? Remember the plight of the poor, uh, “migrants”.

Anyway, Americas’s largest border is her 300+ International Airports.

Eventually the pendulum will swing back to the right and when it does LOOK OUT.
We’re getting mad.

Then what's the point of opposing that doesn't work in the 1st place? It reminds me a lot of how Dims believe that more government control over business & the economy is the answer to what government involvement created in the 1st place!

Bullcrap. Since when did the war on terror suddenly become the extension of the drug war? Given how long and unsuccessful the drug war has been, do you really want that? I don’t trust Obama and know full well how he’s trying to screw up our country, but previous administrations have helped get us to where we are now.

Wellllllllll now...don't you know that those of us who enjoy marijuana & other recreational drugs are responsible for this terror & should be treated as if we have committed treason against the United States?

Sure thing! Why, even Ted Nugent himself said something to that effect, so it must be true! < /sarc>

“...more heroin addicts mean less world population of the caucasian kind”

And if that don’t work...we’ll have to declare a national emergency.

I don’t know about heroin but alcohol consumption is certainly up. That is about the only way to temporarily escape this POS.

The war on drugs has always been part of the war on terror. Islamist and communist terrorists all over the world use drugs as weapons to destroy the people of the United States.
