PARIS President Nicolas Sarkozy lashed out Monday at the practice of wearing the Muslim burqa, insisting the full-body religious gown is a sign of the "debasement" of women and that it won't be welcome in France.
The French leader expressed support for a recent call by dozens of legislators to create a parliamentary commission to study a small but growing trend of wearing the full-body garment in France.
In the first presidential address in 136 years to a joint session of France's two houses of parliament, Sarkozy laid out his support for a ban even before the panel has been approved braving critics who fear the issue is a marginal one and could stigmatize Muslims in France.
"In our country, we cannot accept that women be prisoners behind a screen, cut off from all social life, deprived of all identity," Sarkozy said to extended applause in a speech at the Chateau of Versailles southwest of Paris.

Thank God. A president with courage.
Riots on the way. Hide your little cars.
It won’t do any good when the French birth rate is below one child per family and the “immigrant” Muslim birth rate is 8.1 per family.
They’ll just vote in Shariah Law and that will be that.
I was in Philadelphia about two years ago there were many black muslim women walking around in full burkas. It was eerie to see.
can anyone imagine our joke of a POTUS saying this?
No wonder the left hates him so much! He has pride in his country and doesn’t want it to be surrendered to machete-weilding headchoppers.
Can we switch Presidents with France?
funny....yet the sad truth
How are real-estate values in France?
The soviet union is lecturing us on our economy. France is lecturing us and setting an example in defending democracy and culture. What the hell has happened to the world? Is this the change Obama promised? Because I would have liked to see that in a campaign commercial..
Way to go Nicholas!!!
Finally, a President with courage against adversity!
I wish the rest of Europe would follow suit, and then start making other changes to their ideological ways. No other religion that I know of requires that companies change their policies in order for these people to be employed. Or installation of foot baths, or prayer times, or any other of the like that disrupts normal societal behaviors.
This must stop, and my hat is off to Sarkozy for taking the first step! Too bad this a$$-O here doesn’t take note of this!
I don’t know MrB...it seems like the far left in France is about as schmucky as our far left is...
Works for me. After all, one doesn't need to be natural born in order to become POTUS anymore
i think michelle ate them
