A conservative and controversial Evangelical Hispanic group today officially endorsed the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court -- an indication that many right-leaning Hispanics are breaking ranks with other mainstream Republicans on the issue.
Called the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders, the group is made up of 20,000 Evangelical Hispanic churches, and is best known for its controversial call for illegal immigrants to boycott the 2010 Census.
On the group's blog, the leader of the group, Rev. Miguel Rivera, credited Sotomayor for being a " measured jurist with bedrock family values."
"She is not a judicial activist who seeks to impose a particular outcome based on her beliefs, but rather a judicious jurist who applies established law to the cases before her. CONLAMIC is confident that she has a restrained approach to the law," he said in the statement.

How sad to see Christians applaud someone because of their ancestry.
We’ve already seen this. My grandmother is friends with a conservative, black pastor. He voted for big ears. I can’t explain it other than anything, but race.
I’m Hispanic. I’ve never heard of them. Who the heck are they?
I guess what matters most today is race.
How quick they will condemn us if we run candidates based upon “whiteness.”
RIP America
It seems ok for all groups to base behavior on race, except whites. Yet whites are supposed to be the only racists. Go figure.
I never saw this coming!!!
And if she should get on how many Catholics would that put on the court?
Exactly what do they know that we don’t know? I personally think that Sotomayor is probably going to disappoint the far left as frequently as not. She isn’t a Ruth Bader Ginsberg or even a Souter. I think that endorsing her is not worthwhile. The Democrats are going to confirm her no matter what, let them without one conservative vote. They deserve nothing less given their treatment of our nominees if for nothing else.
You hit the truth.
Race and ethnicity always outs.
They are pro- illegal immigration, and I would guess, pro-amnesty.
They believe citizens and illegals have a right to have the State pay for all their medical and educational needs.
I wouldn’t call them conservative, though they hold to a couple or three social conservative principles.
The only people decieved about racial matters are the whites.
Look at the bright side. This endorsement will drive the Kos Kommeez, the DUmmies, the NutRoots in general and their Beltway enablers into an epic tiz, since this means she’s obviously one-a them there anti-Choice zealots, lol.
Race and Racists seem to be the only real political power these days. I wonder if that will ever sink in with the whites or has guilt replaced pride because of our school indoctrination system. When is the last time your kid came home proud of anything a white guy accomplished, like founding our nation.
La Raza! Similar to La Cosa Nostra?
I’m white and proud of it. I just think its funny that I get labeled racist because I tell the truth. I’d vote for a conservative black before I would a radical white. Though anymore it seems that wouldn’t matter because black is black and white is white. Either that or my grandmother’s friend is a liar.
Protestant evangelicalism is a relatively small percentage of the Hispanic population. The vast majority of Hispanics are Catholic. And the vast majority also voted for Obama.
“When is the last time your kid came home proud of anything a white guy accomplished, like founding our nation.”
I find that to be the difference between myself and alot of blacks. I’m proud that a guy/girl accomplished anything worthwhile, not because they accomplished something and the color of his skin.
I am white by the way, the way I stated that made it sound as if I myself am black.
...and Powell endorsed OBAMA. Its about race...always has been.
there really is not much of a conservative nature in Latin American churches, the majority lean left, and love to be pandered to.
before you flame me, Puerto Rican, who has travelled from Mexico through the Darian gap into Panama, and spent time in countries in between, have inlaws living in Colombia SA,
and members of the Clergy.
Liberation Theology through and through. But they are, by and large, opposed to abortion.
Yes sir.
that sadly to say is changing.
Sorry, but if they put race before Christ, then I question the truth of their Christian profession.
Here’s their platform:
And.....the PLANTATION PARTY (Dems) continues to keep its slaves...
Which is the reason I know longer will go to service when me grandmother’s friend is preaching at church.
I would doubt if this is a conservative group. In name only?
Ditto.
It seems to me that for every race other than whites, it always boils down to race. When will we ever learn.
La Raza needs to sign up these racist churches.
In Liberal-land, racial considerations trump everything else.
If this group is backing Sotomayor they aren’t Conservatives.
just as with African-American Christians supporting Obama, these Hispanics who support Sotomayor are showing their true convictions... to be swayed by someone's ethnicity tells me their convictions never really ran deep...
COnservative my ASS. A bunch of sniveling evangelical libtards.
I don't know the evangelical breakdown but the total Hispanic Protestant vote is a slightly larger percentage of the Hispanic vote than the total Catholic vote is in America, about 27% Catholic voters in America and about 32% Protestant within the Hispanic vote.
Hispanic Protestants voted 56% for Bush in 2004 and 52% Obama in 2008, Hispanic Catholics went 79% for Obama in 2008.
Read the platform. Seems that the CONSERVATIVE agenda is simply a means to a population-voter plurality. Removing those items pretty much a liberal ideology.
America has become a nation that determines qualifications based on ethnicity...
Very true. I called a friend's hand on that once (he's Hispanic, or, er Mexican-American, or Chicano, Latino or whatever the term is this month) after he proudly announced that he joined an Hispanic Peace Officer's Association. I told him great, I just joined a newly formed Anglo Peace Officer's Association (which doesn't exist of course).
He meekly suggested that that sounded "racist". Oh really? I asked, then what does he think about the the exclusive "Hispanic" in the title of his fav organiztion.
He admitted that my point was well taken but he still is a member of that racist organization.
Their religion suggests that they seek God’s direction. Very obviously, they haven’t. (He only has one opinion - it isn’t split)
I think it might be poor teaching that’s at fault here or the complete lack of teaching.
Barry’s Post-Racial America Ping.
In what sense is this group conservative? They don’t sound conservative to me.
Very True.
The only people as a group which use character instead of skin pigmentation as the determiner of someone’s worth are the Whites as well and maybe the Asians.
If she is “pro-life” I can guarantee that won’t interfere with her stance on overriding the constitution using judicial activism. In otherwords she’ll uphold “roe”.
The only way your argument would work is if she were a Totally judicial activist which didn’t care about past decisions in which judicial activism played a role, in otherwords if she were totally j.a. and used her personal feelings in her rulings no matter what..THEN BEING PRO-LIFE WOULD MATTER, otherwise, she shouldn’t matter..
What argument?
That her being pro-life matters..otherwise my bet, she will still keep roe becuase her “judicial activism” judidical philosophy would win out..

‘’We are going to continue transporting our fellow Latinos no matter their status,’’ Rivera said.
If taken to jail, Rivera said he will sing and preach there and continue fighting against the law.
Rivera and his group of so-called Christian Latino clergy are trying to bully their way to victory.
