For the record and as a practical boon to us ordinary folk, I saw a microscope that connects to a computer with up to 400 power magnification an projects the image on the monitor.
It costs $36. My grand son has about 3 or 4 years to go before I buy us one.

Coincidentally, I was at the Wash state surplus store Friday and they had a few microscopes for sale. Got a heck of a deal.
