Wow. This story has just taken my breath away. Do you remember the State Department analyst in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research (relatively obscure but one of the US government's intelligence agencies) who caused a storm in late 2006 with his disdainful remarks about the US-UK "special relationship?
His name was Kendall Myers and I was one of two British journalists who reported his decidedly undiplomatic comments. He retired quietly in 2007. Well, he's just been arrested as a spy for Cuba for nearly 30 years. The Cubans apparently knew him better as their Agent 202.
I'm told that his comments made him something of a hero among career officials in some quarters of the State Department and he received only a minor admonishment for them.

I met Myers for a drink once back, I think, in 2001 or 2002, I think, at Chef Geoff's restaurant in downtown Washington. He wanted to get my opinions on whether hardline Unionist politicians might be prepared to cut a political deal with Sinn Fein and the IRA.
He told me his brief was to provide "out of the box" thinking drawn from a variety of sources to career State Department diplomats formulating policy. At the time, the Good Friday Agreement peace deal in Northern Ireland peace was under severe strain.
I found him to be an erudite and well-read fellow who was an interesting conversationalist and was much more indiscreet that most State Department officials. He was clearly no fan of President George W. Bush and seemed to be fit the caricature of the pro-European, soft-Left type that is often levelled at the State Department by conservatives.

Any odds on whether BO pardons them?
His buddies at the State Department must be pissed.
Not because he was a traitor, but because they only got paychecks from one government.
I’m sure this couple didn’t do anything that most of their colleagues would be willing to do for the cause. Or are doing or have done. They just got caught.
His down fall was alcohol."
Yep! It was the alcohol that made him susceptible to the counter-attacks by the commie-loving fellow travelers in the press and on TV (even then).
If he could have stayed around for another 10-years or so, we might have gotten State fully flushed of the infestation of commie sympathizers.
We continue to pay for that un-flushed toilet even today.
Of course the infestation has spread throughout other agencies such as EPA, Energy, Health & Human Services, and, most of all, Education.
