US President Barack Obama made a major gesture of conciliation to Iran on Thursday when he admitted US involvement in the 1953 coup which overthrew the government of Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh. "In the middle of the Cold War, the United States played a role in the overthrow of a democratically elected Iranian government," Obama said during his keynote speech to the Muslim world in Cairo.
It is the first time a serving US president has publicly admitted American involvement in the coup.

Obama also said: "For many years, Iran has defined itself in part by its opposition to my country, and there is in fact a tumultuous history between us.
"Since the Islamic Revolution, Iran has played a role in acts of hostage-taking and violence against U.S. troops and civilians. This history is well known.
"Rather than remain trapped in the past, I've made it clear to Iran's leaders and people that my country is prepared to move forward. The question now is not what Iran is against, but rather what future it wants to build."
Shortly after Obama's inauguration on January 20, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad demanded apologies for "crimes" he said the United States had committed against Iran, starting with the 1953 coup.

Iran had a prime minister, Mossadegh, who was more than likely going to put Iran firmly in the Soviet orbit. We would have none of it, and used conservative (including clerical) elements of Iranian society to overthrow him and put Shah Reza Pahlavi in power.

His party was elected and he was installed as prime minister in 1951, but when he illegally nationalized Iran’s oil industry in 1953 he dissolved the Parliament to prevent them from passing a no-confidence resolution that would have ended his prime ministership and led to a general election in which his party was almost certain to lose.
The Iranian constitution was modeled on the English: The King (in this case the Shah) in Parliament. That is, the King convenes the Parliament, appoints the Prime Minister submitted to him by the majority of the Parliament and calls new elections when there is no confidence in Parliamentary leadership.
When Mossadegh unconstitutionally dissolved Parliament and assumed dictatorial status, imprisoning the Shah in his palace and carrying on negotiations with Khruschev to align Iran with the Soviet bloc, the Shah appealed to the international community and Iran’s chief allies, the UK and the USA.
The US and UK intelligence agencies assisted the Shah in overthrowing the dictator and arresting him.”

Who cares if we played a role in the overthrow of of their government in the 1953? It happened before many of us, including Obama, were even born. I am rather skeptical if it happened they way Obama said it did though.
In the bigger picture, however, this development doesn’t really surprise me. Libs have an apologetic syndrome. They apologized to Blacks for slavery, to Hawaii for overthrow of their monarchy, to Indians for putting them on reservations, etc... They also have no problem throwing tax payer money to everyone they apologize to. It’s sick.
So, be ready for Obama to open up the treasury to the Iranians.

Mosaddeq (ruler prior to Pahlavi) was a strange character, Westernized in some ways but very tied in with the left and with friends on the fanatical Muzzie side, and the British were also very much involved in his removal because he had nationalized some British oil facility and in addition was sort of a loose cannon. (You have to remember that this happened many years ago, under Eisenhower.)
Mosaddegh was a good friend of Moqri, who was a good friend of Khomeni, and the latter two returned to together to Iran from exile in Paris in 1979.
The Shah was actually, compared to their earlier rulers, pretty good; he kept a lid on Islamic extremism, allowed the education of women and in fact was excellent in encouraging the progress of women, and was well on his way to turning Iran into a fairly functional country until a bizarre leftist/Islamist alliance was enabled by Jimmy Carter and attacked him (non-democratically, may I add).
