Air France told CNN the jet was traveling from Rio de Janeiro to Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris when contact was lost.

The airline said flight AF447 was carrying 216 passengers in addition to a crew of 12. The plane is listed as an Airbus A330.

State radio reported a crisis center was being set up at Charles de Gaulle where the plane had been due to land at 11.15 a.m. local time.

Reports said an air force search and rescue operation was underway around the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha, 365 kilometers (226 miles) off the mainland.

The search is near fernando de noronha, brazil. That’s an island over 300 miles off the coast. Extremely unlikely that fuel or weather is a factor as that’s only about 2 hours into the flight and well into the cruise phase. The lack of communication means whatever happened was probably sudden.

SNIPPET: “Brazilian air force spokesman Col Henry Munhoz told Brazilian TV it had failed to be picked up by radar on the Cape Verde Islands on its way across the Atlantic.

“Air Force planes left Fernando de Noronha and are flying towards Europe to start the search for the missing plane,” he said.
Flight AF 447 left Rio at 1900 local time (2200 GMT) on Sunday. It had 216 passengers and 12 crew on board, including three pilots.”

Brazil's air force confirmed the plane was missing and said a search and rescue mission was under way near the island of Fernando de Noronha.

==

If that is where the search is, the plane apparently didn't get very far in its flight.

Prayers up for all on board and their families.

(Keep the Faith, my friends! We are the saviors of the Republic! Now and Forever!)

That time is now in dispute.

My son was on an Air France just yesterday. USA to Paris, to Italy with 20 other college students. My prayers for the fallen passengers.
