Job Fight: Immigrants vs. Locals Tennessee Residents Compete for Work They Once Scorned
Wall Street Journal ^ | MIRIAM JORDAN

Posted on 05/23/2009 6:45:34 AM PDT by Brilliant

...Burmese refugee Cho Aye traveled 60 miles from Nashville ...to take a place at the head of the line outside Shelbyville's state employment office. The next day, the office was to take applications for $9.35-an-hour jobs processing chicken at the local Tyson Foods plant. Directly behind Ms. Aye...were 16 more Burmese refugees...

Farther back in the line, marked by orange tape and monitored by police, locals like David Curtis seethed. "This is the worst job I have ever applied for," said the 31-year-old welder... Eyeing those ahead of him, he added: "I'm very annoyed foreigners are taking jobs that Americans need."

American workers -- who for years have largely avoided fruit-picking, office-cleaning and meat-processing shifts -- are increasingly vying for these jobs with immigrants, creating flashpoints in places like Shelbyville...

The rising friction has been on display at the employment center here. When Tyson put out an earlier call for applications, in February, shoving and cursing broke out between locals and immigrants...

Now such plants are reporting a surge in applications from U.S.-born workers, says the American Meat Institute... Outside Phoenix, a metropolis that helped define the recent building boom, college-educated Americans are applying for jobs at the JBS SA beef-processing plant...

The battle in Shelbyville reflects not only American workers' reversing fortunes, but also the shrinking opportunities for many immigrants. President Barack Obama and leaders in both parties have said they hope to vote on comprehensive immigration reform. Lawmakers who take a strict line on illegal immigration, such as Texas Rep. Lamar Smith and Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, both Republicans, have said legalizing undocumented workers would hurt American workers during an economic downturn...

Tyson countered that hiring Shelbyville residents first "would be discriminatory and in violation of equal employment law," according to a letter...

If those who voted dem are in this line, they are getting the results of their foolish choice of this past and evil election.

You are correct - voting for the Dems has brought this influx of immigrants. It seems that suddenly there are no jobs that Americans “won’t do” and they are realizing the results of their folly.

On the other hand, if these folks are here legally, they have every right to apply for these jobs along with anyone else.

Several years ago, I was angry at my employer (a multispecialty health care system) and traveled to New Zealand to consider a position as a medical director. My background and education were such that it would have been easy to go there and provide a service that was badly needed. Simply put, their immigration strategy was built on approving those who brought sets of defined skills that were necessary to the country and that they could not supply themselves.

What would be so wrong with adopting a rational immigration policy in the United States like that?

Yet look at the numbers of unskilled people that we take in. Let's meet our own needs first and then attend to the needs of the rest of the world.

Obama likes this.

Wait till the unskilled immigrants come from Cube. That will be hilarious to Obama. He'll have legitimate U.S. citizens competing for LESS for even more “scorned” jobs. I'm telling ya, he want the U.S. to be a third world country. Whoever makes more will be taxed to death and the “wealth redistributed.”

The redistribution of wealth is a myth. When those who are smart enough to become super-rich leave this tax heavy nation, there will be no wealth to distribute. There will be many, many poor, and we will have a dictator. The conservatives better get on the ball with these elections and tell everyone what this is doing to the nation.

It would be different if the “immigrants” had a desire to become Americans and adopt our culture, but they spit on our culture, demanding that we adapt everything to them. Any immigration reform that doesn't send illegals packing with no possibility of returning is unacceptable. We should have the same approach to “guest workers” as Switzerland. If they have a labor shortage, they will allow foreigners to work as long as they need them. The guest workers have no rights to social benefits, no automatic path to citizenship, and if they are fired or laid off they must leave. You cannot immigrate to Australia if you simply want to. You must have an advanced degree or at least a specialized skill set they need. Marrying an Australian citizen doesn't get you in either. Being against the unchecked immigration of poorly educated refuges isn't racist, it's self preservation.

I’ve had some bad jobs in my life, the worst was washing out used milk cans full of maggots so they could be reused. During the summer the rotten milk, maggots, heat and flies made the job difficult. Other jobs were just as bad but this was the worst.

During GW Bush's term, AMERICANS REALLY WOULD NOT DO THESE JOBS. It is only now that citizens are very grudgingly willing to do these jobs.

Frankly, if I want to hire someone, I would prefer that they like the job they are doing as opposed to thinking "this is the worst job I've ever done". Illegals are still probably better employees for these jobs (because they are happy with these jobs) even if they pay taxes.

It is ALL attitude. If you want to have money to pay bills, then work. And, if all you can find is _____________ (fill in the blank), then that's what you need to do ... cheerfully. I'm doing it right now in a job. My boss likes me and takes care of me even though the pay is low. I'm grateful for the job and am able to meet expenses. If you refuse to do it, then someone else will step in to do it and you will resort to robbing someone or getting into some kind of trouble that will lead to jail. That is not an option for me.

I would like to point out that this reporting does a pretty good job at presenting the facts. However, a little investigation into the fact that some of those immigrants were illegal might be appropriate. Why no action by police? What is the town’s policy on illegal immigrants? The mayor and city council talked with Tyson, what did they have to say about illegals and whether or not the city pursues them?

First off, the article mentions that the Burmese are refugees and are legal.

Second, Tyson has been voluntarily using FedGov's employee verification since 1996 so any illegal working for Tyson slipped thru the system.

JBS-SA bought Swift after the Dec 2006 raids.

Swift now JBS-SA was/is using employee verification. Most of the meat industry uses verification. Based on the raids in 2006, which had a lot of coverage, we have some good stats.

Between 10% and 15% are slipping thru verification and about 1% are using id theft to work. Most of the id theft is not theft of SS numbers but of green card data.

The AZ law on verification applies only to new hires.

Sure they would. Look at how many Americans lined up for these jobs after an immigration raid. And would you have said the same about picking cotton in the 1850's?

Not after you factor in the social costs.

If I was hiring, I’d take the Burmese over the guy that considers it ‘the worst job he’s ever applied for’. He’s starting out with a bad attitude, and it’s unlikely to get any better. I’d rather have someone who wants the job.

Illegals are still probably better employees for these jobs (because they are happy with these jobs) even if they pay taxes.

That isn't even close to true, that is why the list of "jobs that Americans won't do" is ever expanding.

Americans will work in restaurants and they love construction and machine shops and factories and plants and even landscaping. What happens is that they get forcefully pushed out of whatever work the immigrants and illegals start absorbing.

I have many times seen areas of work where when the first illegals show up pay freezes and then drops, the illegals have a friend or neighbor to instantly fill every new empty position that opens up, the self respect of the American workers starts plunging as they now are equal to third world villagers that don't even speak English, and as the pay checks start shrinking and their buddies that haven't been effected yet start looking down on their work.

The most ugly truth of all is that the illegals in every job shut out the American worker, they create a hostile and foreign work place to any white or black that tries to keep or gain his place among a work crew that the Mexicans now own.

Look at the America around you, you will notice that no non Mexicans manage to penetrate into a Mexican work force, you may see whites and blacks try but they don't try for long.

ex-snook said: "and then wondered why he can’t find a good paying job in AMERICA"

And what is meant by "good paying job" is a job which permits the American to have a standard of living that is higher than those doing similar work in foreign countries. What law of economics would permit such a thing remains a mystery.

The economic head start that our parents and grandparents had by virtue of the freedom our country takes so much for granted has been squandered by tax and spend socialists.

The key to prosperity is capital accumulation. For centuries, America was at the center of capital accumulation. Capitalists in other countries invested in America. It was THE place to invest. Now, capital is leaving America, due to creeping socialism, and it is going elsewhere. You can’t build an oil refinery in America. You can build an oil refinery in Brazil. If you run a manufacturing company, you build your plant near the oil refineries. There aren’t many oil refineries in America. There are a lot in Brazil. Get the picture?

If we adopt the corruption and socialism of the rest of the world, then we might as well be "citizens of the world". Our prosperity depends upon the principles that created that prosperity.

I was disheartened when none of the speakers this morning on Fox News addressed the fact that every government-subsidized car that GM sells is a tax-payer financed reduction in opportunity for Ford to sell a car.

Brilliant said: "The key to prosperity is capital accumulation. "

I'm quite sure that the typical liberal doesn't have a clue what "capital accumulation" is.

Capital begins as deferred consumption. The wealth that results can then be used to purchase assets and purchase the labor and innovation of people. Only the self-interest of those who are choosing to defer consumption will cause capital to be invested.

Take away that self-interest and the investment ceases. Take away the wealth, and the deferred consumption ceases.
