A Little Child Shall Lead: 12-Year-Old Pro-Life Lia Speaks at March for Life
Catholic Online ^ | 5/23/09

Lia, the twelve-year-old girl who made headlines for presenting a pro-life speech in a school speech competition against tremendous opposition from her teachers earlier this year, gave her exceptional oration to the 12,000 strong crowd at the National March For Life in Ottawa, Canada last week.

Lia, who is from Ontario, adapted her speech for the March for Life slightly, adding, “Every day, 115,000 are being put to death through abortion. 115,000. Look around at this great sea of people. This is only about 10,000 people. Every two hours, this amount of children are killed because of abortion.”

Lia became a household name in the pro-life world when she was disqualified from a public speaking contest last February. She gave her speech anyway, while still being disqualified, causing one of the judges to leave the panel before her speech even began. Controversy among the judges caused them to reverse their earlier decision to disqualify Lia and she ended up winning the contest.

They posted her speech on youtube and had to stop the comments because thousands of people were threatening to kill her. The aborters just can’t stop trying to abort.

I don’t like using children for conservative political causes any more than for liberal ones. It’s shameful.

We live in a sad world. A twelve-year old should not even have to know what the word ‘abortion’ means.

Some twelve year olds are having abortions. If the girl was pushed into this by others, I agree, it’s manipulation. But what if she came to her views all on her own?

“I don’t like using children for conservative political causes any more than for liberal ones. It’s shameful.”

Please don’t underestimate some of these kids. I’ve been blown away by how some have a profound awareness, are articulate and THEY have a desire to be heard. Sometimes, it seems that they’re being put on earth at this time in history for some purpose.

However, with that being said, I agree about exploiting - but some of these kids WANT to be heard.. and it’s nice when they have support behind them.

I don't like the suppression of children's thinking, especially when it's congruent with conservatism. I remember when I was 12. I had my own thoughts and I *expressed* them. It's very clear that this initiative came from the girl, herself. I think that she should not be censored.

If the 12 yr girl is intelligent, her thoughts could easily be hers.

Those of us who deal with the gifted get accustomed to insightful comments from the young.

The ability to make such observations at those early ages is why they are called “gifted”.

To be honest, I slam dems for trotting out children to make their political points, so I can't really support using a child for the same purpose here.

“even though you can’t hear them, or see them at all, a person’s a person, no matter how small.”

But what if she came to her views all on her own?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How would a child come to a decision to abort a baby on her own? She’s influenced by media, schools, advertisements, “famous” people, the baby’s father. She’s not living in a vacuum. And if she were, how can you say she would choose to abort?
I don’t see how its so far-fetched for a 12-year-old to come to the conclusion that abortion is wrong on their own.
Its not like it takes a genius to figure out that ending a human life out of convenience is immoral.
