One of the things that may have helped to make folks think the quake was bigger than it may have been, is the broad territory where it was felt. It was felt from New Orleans to New England.
We had a pretty large quake about 125 miles from where I am now, and it didn’t seem like much of a quake at all to me at the time. The New Madrid fault was probably felt everywhere east of the Mississippi, and considerably west of it as well.
If the region is shutting down earthquake wise, that’s great. I had always thought I would live to see the next shaker there. It’s looks like I may not.
I note that they now talk about a 500 to 1000 space between events. They used to talk about 200 years. Let’s hope the new estimate is right.
Who knows, we may be able to predict quakes in a thousand years. ;-)

5.7 is starting to get up into the something earthquakes.
Is this a 5.7 in SoCal or a 5.7 in a remote mountainous mud-structure city in Iran we're talking about? Mexico lies somewhere in between those two...

Exactly. I've never experienced an earthquake but I imagine a 5.7 here in the USA would not cause serious damage. In Mexico, with reports that buildings were "swaying", I wouldn't be surprised if there was major damage.

Well I would not say it is a " nothing" quake. Having lived in So. California all of my almost 70 years,and on a earthquake forum with some knowledgeable people, I would say it all depends! I have been through all of the earthquakes from the 40's on...and given the right setting a 5.7 can do some significant damage. Of course compared with the Northridge, Sylmar, and Landers quakes....yes, that is quite a bit less intense.

Sometimes, sometimes not.
Not much of a problem when you are on good soil in well built buildings.
Mexico City is built to 'Mexican Casual' standards on what amounts to a bowl of jelly.
The Mexico City quake in the 50s was over 7 and other than a very few 150 year old plus 2or3 story brick buildings and the new American high rise hotel there was very little damage.
Mexico City is in some ways more vulnerable that it was in 1957, for one thing there are more tall buildings. So much water has been pumped out of the soils that they are now poorly consolidated and subject to collapse. (OTOH, I'd guess this would also reduce liquefaction risk a bit).
The right ground shake frequency (about one cycle per 2.5 seconds) will ring the ground like a gong. Any buildings with the same resonant frequency that are anywhere near the peak shake zones will get the bejabers shaken out of them!
Luck of the draw. A lower magnitude quake at the right frequency can be more damaging than an untuned larger one.
I wouldn't completely discount a 5.7, not for Mexico City anyway. But you are correct: generally a 5.7 is enough to rattle nerves and break some stuff, but not particularly dangerous.

I done over $million of building repairs after those quakes from 2-3 story to 13 story and not one was damaged by “shaking”.
They are a vertical upheaval that radiates out from the epicenter in a wave action, all fault movement is a result of the quake and not the cause, I don't give a shit what university assholes say.
Check Drudge, I predicted a New Madrid quake for the beginning of summer, looks like I was off by 2 or 3 months, they just had shakes in OK
