Lots of Mujahideen leftovers from russian afghan conflict remain. As well intercepted / hijacked contracted trucking etc has munitions on board. Multiple sources in addition to illegal or political redirects.
Just what I saw and my opinion......
The Taliban uses Ak-47s. The Afghan Army (except a few elite units) uses Ak-47s. They all use new Chinese Ammo and left over Russian ammo.

Somebody bought a crapload of 7.62x39. Those Russian factories turn it out by the shipload. It has been scarce for over a year now. Someone bought up enough to start a decent sized war.

Honestly, I would not be surprised. During the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the Afghani government troops were often more sympathetic to the Mujahadeen rebels than the “allied” Soviet troops. I can’t help but think Taliban forces have more than a few sympathetic ears in the current Afghani Army.
I also think you could have a case where soldiers or civilians are doing business with elements of the Taliban not so much out of sympathy but greed. I bet the Tallies are paying well for ammo and weapons - probably a lot more than a supply clerk makes in a week or month.
All just speculation on my part, of course. If it is indeed the case, I’m hoping our guys find the “leakers” very soon (and find a lovely spot in the desert to bury what’s left of them).

This is total BS. Wolf is a Russian firm that is probably the largest distributor of 7.62x39 in the world which is the main cartridge used by the jihadis. I would be surprised if they didn’t find it. It is sold in the US but also sold all over the world. I doubt if there is any evidence that this ammo was sold in the US or to the US military before ending up in terrorist possession. Same for the Czech ammo which is probably cold war surplus. Look to Russia for the connection.
One well placed nuke and we wouldn’t have an ammo shortage!
