Where is Laurel MD located? Is it on the Delmarva? Or mainland?

A couple blocks away. Pretty dangerous place to go to school, from my understanding. I wouldnt send one of my kids there for all the rubles in Moldova.

Thank you. I was a bit nervous. My nephew is in the Laurel DE hs, on the Delmarva peninsula. Not too familiar with how the area is divided.

Laurel, MD is between Baltimore and Washington. It has a dubious fame of being the place where Alabama Governor and Presidental candidate George Wallace was shot and paralyzed by a shooter.

He couldn't have a gun.

Maryland has some of the most draconian gun laws in the country to prevent just this sort of thing.

Laurel High School On Lockdown
Posted By: Susan Phillips

LAUREL, Md. (WUSA) - A high school in Prince George’s County is on lockdown after a phone tip alerted police to possible danger early Thursday morning.

Laurel Police and Prince George’s County Police responded to the scene and the school was placed on lockdown.

Officers are searching the school inside and out, as well as school buses. Students are being held on the buses while the search is conducted. So far no evidence of suspicious activity has been found.

We used to have knucklehead kids making bomb threats at least once a week. Often these were just notes taped up in the school bathroom. They finally caught 2 kids and arrested them for making threats. I think the schools and police also stopped paying attention to the less credible threats. Now the problem has completely gone away.

The seniors are taking their finals this week. Could be some kid didn't want to take a test today.

OR...it could be their way of doing "skip day"

One thing, the school doesn't have metal detectors and does have multiple, multiple entrances, so anything good get in and out of there.

I retired from Andrews 7 years ago. It was worse then. Laurel is absolutely paradise compared to Camp Springs, Suitland, Forestville, and Temple Hills.

Laurel Maryland is on the mainland part of the State, just east of the Capital Beltway... and Beltsville, MD...which is adjacent to College Park, U of MD campus.

More recently, it was also known as the place that some of the 9/11 hijackers holed up before staging for Dulles.

Bomb scares were the thing to do back in the 80’s at my HS, although while I was still in grade/middle school.

Phone in a bomb threat, which evacuated the students for a few hours. I guess someone didn’t want to take a test that day. Of course, never found a bomb. And I don’t recall if they ever caught the person or people who made the calls.

My wife and I were going to purchase a home several blocks away from Laurel High school about 25 years ago. We decided against it because my wife was a little bit pregant with our favorite first-born daughter. One of the reasons we did not purchase that house was to stay out of PG County.

In one sentence they have poor discipline and poor academics.

These days we are trained to abhor guns at school. I bet they do not have ROTC with rifles. My dad had real rifles at this high school in DC when he was growing up. They let the kids take them home. No one ever thought anything about it. They were trained in responsible gun use.
We purchased in Howard County. Everything I have heard about PG in the next 25 years has made me happy about that decision.

I remember hearing from my favorite second born daughter many years later that even the GT kids who transferred in from PG were usually put in on-grade classes in Howard County at her school.

Wow. Kid with a gun. I didn't know baby goats carried guns. < /sarcasm >

Ya know. Back in the day I used to take my guns to school. My buddies and I many times would leave right after football (or whichever sport we happened to be practicing at the time) and either go do a little target practicing or hunting. Now it makes front page news world wide when a gun is carried onto a campus.

I think, in my opinion, the only way to insure that your child is as safe as you can make him/her is either persuade your local school board to allow all students to carry weapons or keep your children home and teach them yourself.

Yup. There was talk about them moving the Preakness down there so they could refurb Pimlico, but nothing ever happened of that. Now it looks like they're going to put slots in there, but I'm not even sure about that 100%.

The track is still there, but tgeres been plenty of additional development due to the growth in government in nearby DC.. Right up the road the other way is the Laurel Mall, where Wallace was shot by Arthur Bremer..Laurel’s claim to fame.

Laurel is about equadistant from Washington and Baltimore. The City of Laurel is in Prince George’s county, but “Greater aurel” encompasses parts of Anne Arundel, Howard, and arguably even Montgomery Counties.
