Joel Simon of the Committee to Protect Journalists rightly says that bloggers are in the vanguard of the information revolution we're going through thanks to the Internet. The impact on things like political freedom and social tolerance is hard to measure, but it's safe to say that whether through websites, blogs, emails, Facebook or Twitter, more people are transmitting information and venting views than ever before. Authoritarian regimes have been unable to stop the march of media freedom, but they continue to try. And bloggers are in the crosshairs--sometimes literally. CPJ has just come out with a report called "The 10 Worst Countries to be a Blogger"--no surprise that the Middle East features prominently. Here's CPJ's thumbnails.

Thank you for the ping. This might also tie in to why Europe is seeking more control over the internet. IMHO, they should develop a “mirror” internet, and allow participation by Americans so we can go “off-shore” for our internet needs, if Obama should ever succeed in cutting off the internet for any reason...Or even, have the power to.

Gee, I'd really like to believe that the telecommunications of the nation, the backbone of the Internet in the U.S. couldn't be literally shut down strategically, browned-out, made viral, or otherwise made ineffective.

You mean something like the current flu pandemic panic or bankruptcy of fourth estate constituents or tanking of ratings of the MSM or a simple discovery order by an appellate court judge?

Maybe all it'll take is a post from an unknown to censure the Internet or a plumber in his front yard to censure speech and trigger paranoid cascade of executive orders; challenged, of course, in the courts, debated in Congress and provide daily fodder for the media while time slips by.
