WASHINGTON President Barack Obama's search to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice David Souter should extend beyond the current roster of federal judges, senators from both political parties said Sunday.
"I would like to see more people from outside the judicial monastery, somebody who has had some real-life experience, not just as a judge," said Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee that will hold hearings when Obama makes his nomination.
Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, a committee member who last week switched from the Republican to the Democratic Party, suggested someone in the mold of a statesman or stateswoman, and said he could imagine a nominee who was not a lawyer, if that a person had the right credentials.

Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, a committee member who last week switched from the Republican to the Democratic Party, suggested someone in the mold of a statesman or stateswoman, and said he could imagine a nominee who was not a lawyer, if that a person had the right credentials.
“I would like to see somebody with broader experience,” Specter said. “We have a very diverse country. We need more people to express a woman’s point of view or a minority point of view, Hispanic or African American ... somebody who’s done something more than wear a black robe for most of their lives.”
Right.
That’s why the job will be given to one of the narrowest people imaginable....
In other words, a COMMUNITY ORGANIZER with lots of ACORN experience!!
Future Supreme Court justices should have a wide stance.
I think this means no community organizers.
I’m betting that famous moderate, the impeached Bill Clinton, is on the short list.
To replace the one who is leaving?
The Supreme Court needs the insight of an accomplished rapist.
I suppose someone who knows what the constitution is would be asking too much. In fact, I suspect the current senate would prefer someone who has no concept of the constitution
The good thing about Specter’s switch is that he makes the GOP’s ability to keep nominees bottled up in committee STRONGER because at least one member of the opposing party must vote to submit the nominee to the full Senate.
That nasty little pervert Perez Hilton comes to mind as the ‘Rats perfect choice.
Oh, kind of like our current POTUS???
/snicker; /sarc
This is idiotic. You want people on the Supreme Court who know something about Federal law, not someone off the street. Leahy is an old fool.
to balance out the inexperience on the executive side?
Translation = liberal views, marxist views, communist veiws
Take you pick.
the most ghastly thought just struck me...........what if Michelle Obama gets nominated for the Court.........in order to weigh in on the question of Bambi’s citizenship if it ever comes up? Is she eligible under the circumstances?
More to thank “principled conservatives” who stayed home for.
Compared to Obama, Clinton is a moderate.
