Are We in a Narcissism Epidemic?
Newsweak ^ | 27 April 2009 | Raina Kelley

But as Twenge goes on to illustrate, all that narcissism is a problem that can range from the discourteous—residential advisers at Southern lament students disregarding curfews, playing dance music until 3 a.m., demanding new room assignments at a moment's notice and failing to understand why professors won't let them make up an exam they were too hung over to take—to the disastrous—failed marriages, abusive working environments and billion-dollar Ponzi schemes. Seems that the flip side of all that confidence isn't prodigious success but antisocial behavior.

My daughter sent me this article. Despite the source, it is a great book review and very timely given Zero's rise to power.

Come hang out in the DC metro area for a bit. Drive the beltway. It’s in the water hear. The first time I was asked the DC 5, I couldn’t believe that someone would casually inquire about my annual salary.

I just spent a fair amount of time with someone who insisted in telling long boring stories about himself, and how smart he was, how successful he was, and how capable he was (he's an auto mechanic -- which is a nice skill to have, but perhaps not equivalent to brain surgeon).

Throughout a two day period, if anyone else spoke, he'd wait until their lips stopped moving, then he would launch into another long boring story about himself, and how smart he was, how successful he was, and how capable he was.

Worst social skills I've ever seen. Most self-centered person I've ever met.

Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues hence,
in the soul in which this virtue does not exist
there cannot be any other virtue except in mere appearance.

Are We in a Narcissism Epidemic?

Counting the sheer incidence of "I"s, "me"s and "my"s in little Miss Raina's piece, I'd have to say, Yes.

Yes and its been that way for a long time. The whole Prosperity Gospel is breed in narcisism. I work with one person who is heavily into that (oddly enough she's not prosperous) and literally every other word out of her mouth is me me me I I I.

I remember during the campaign when Obama was making one of his campaign speeches there was a woman in the crowd behind Obama and she literally was not listening to anything Obama was saying. She was just looking up and the jumbotron looing at herself while yapping on her cell phone and fixing her hair. I thought it was typical of the narcisism that dominates most leftists nowadays.

MNarcism, Charismatic narcism. So one can only hope that America will wake up to his narcism. We will see.

No good will come of it.

Freeper Fred Nerks had Obama pegged as a narscist 2 years ago. Her prediction is actially extraordinary, and she knows exactly what will come next.Perhaps she will enlighten us. I have pinged her.

All you have to do is wake up in the morning. Obama was elected BY these people. They are the product of the “everybody wins, everybodys the best” there are no losers mentality they were brought up with in the last generation. When I was little, we kept score, someone was the BEST. Some won, some lost. Lifes NOT fair, deal with it is not a mantra that is understood today very well. Prime example, that teen that got the crap beat out of her on youtube a couple years back, and all the parents trying to get the perps of that beating off without punishment. It happens every day, everywhere, kids doing wrong then their “parents” (and I do use the term LOOSELY) run to the school and threaten everyone under the sun that while it was wrong what their child did, they have suffered enough already, and should be allowed to attend their graduation or the prom or whatever was taken away as punishment. When they don’t get their way, they end up like the tot mom or octo mom, looking to fufill themselves, everyone and everything else be damned. It is sick, and it is prevelant.

" In Yo face, I am comfortable with my ownself, and if ya doan like it, then eff all of you.I make mah own rules!" Actially its ego unbound. In the tadition of india it is called Rudra, and Obama? He is a Rudravartin, a king of ego unbound who will cause immense suffering. He cares nothing about anyone but himself, and will have NO compunction that will prevent him from imposing his personal will on America. That is a problem, and one which the Democratic Party will have to eventually confront. And then the purges will begin, and after Obama is through purging his own party, I predict that he will go to work on America, the ground work has already been laid, and he has borrowed enough money to do it, while destroying the wealth and influence of his traditional opposition, financial houses, banks, GM, Chrysler, just the beginning.

So one can only hope that America will wake up to his narcism. We will see.

No good will come of it.

“But realize this, that in the last days perilous times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.” 2 Timothy 3:1-5

I’ve got relatives like that. They are almost impossible to be around.

I’m just finishing up the book, The Mirror Effect, based on this same premise. It’s written by Dr. Drew Pinsky and I’d highly recommend it. Great insight on our culture and the devastating effect celebrity worship has on our youth.

His belief is that celebrities don’t become narcissistic, they are already highly narcissistic and seek fame as an ill-fated attempt for affirmation. When this worshipful affirmation doesn’t fulfill their need, they turn to hypersexuality, drugs, outrageous behavior and aggression. Our culture rewards this acting out by giving these celebrities more attention (ie. reward). Kids see this bad behavior rewarded, and view it as a potential answer to their own relational issues and mirror it. This unhealthy behavior then becomes the new normal.

I am wondering after reading this book if we’ll ever elect a president on substance again. Our culture is just so obsessed with our tabloid “heroes,” we only think in terms of “popularity.” (Freepers excluded from that assumption of course!)

We are in a humanistic epidemic. Our elite are amoral citizens of the globe. We are their fodder.

The book reviewer is clearly a narcissist but she can't see it, even reading about narcissism. The whole article revolves around her, not the book. Another clue is her envy. Vanity always occurs with envy, resulting in leftist desires to take things from fellow Americans and wish them ill fortune: it is too soon to tell if our economic free fall will cure America of its sense of economic privilege, it has made it much harder to get the money together to give our kids six-figure sweet-16 parties and plastic surgery for graduation presents

Yeah - it’s all the kids fault.

Why didn’t I think of it before?
