Seeking to Save the Planet, With a Thesaurus (how to lie persuasively)

The problem with global warming, some environmentalists believe, is “global warming.

The term turns people off, fostering images of shaggy-haired liberals, economic sacrifice and complex scientific disputes, according to extensive polling and focus group sessions conducted by ecoAmerica, a nonprofit environmental marketing and messaging firm in Washington.

Instead of grim warnings about global warming, the firm advises, talk about “our deteriorating atmosphere.” Drop discussions of carbon dioxide and bring up “moving away from the dirty fuels of the past.” Don’t confuse people with cap and trade; use terms like “cap and cash back” or “pollution reduction refund.”

EcoAmerica has been conducting research for the last several years to find new ways to frame environmental issues and so build public support for climate change legislation and other initiatives. A summary of the group’s latest findings and recommendations was accidentally sent by e-mail to a number of news organizations by someone who sat in this week on a briefing intended for government officials and environmental leaders.

Asked about the summary, ecoAmerica’s president and founder, Robert M. Perkowitz, requested that it not be reported until the formal release of the firm’s full paper later this month, but acknowledged that its wide distribution now made compliance with his request unlikely.

The research directly parallels marketing studies conducted by oil companies, utilities and coal mining concerns that are trying to “green” their images with consumers and sway public policy.

Environmental issues consistently rate near the bottom of public worry, according to many public opinion polls. A Pew Research Center poll released in January found global warming last among 20 voter concerns; it trailed issues like addressing moral decline and decreasing the influence of lobbyists.

I see, the "dirty fuels of the past", like oil, natural gas, and coal. The masses don't really need affordable electricity.

"Cap and cash back"? Where the heck is the cash coming from? "Cap and tax" is more honest.

I'd say this is a joke, but Obama got elected in part by promising "tax cuts" for people who are not paying taxes. Conservatives need to push their own realistic terms like "cap and tax".

The philosophy behind this article -- people can't judge the evidence and don't know what's good for them, so must be brainwashed -- was explained at length in an earlier article in the NYT "green isssue" Why Isn’t the Brain Green? .

People who think the atmosphere is bad now should look back and remember when smog would cloud the cities so badly the sun was in shadow 24/7.

Drop discussions of carbon dioxide and bring up “moving away from the dirty fuels of the past.”

This is classically disingenuous. "Dirty" refers to particulates, not to odorless, colorless, non-toxic gases.

Our modern methods of using fossil fuels release remarkably few particulates to the air.

From now on Global Warming will be called Global Cooling. Use it today.

That is all.

Show me a single scrubber or precipitator unit on a smokestack in China.

They have them, although I have no numbers on their efficiency relative to here.

I'm aware of this because some of the synthetic gypsum generated by the scrubbers as a byproduct wound up in drywall imported from China which is now causing issues in FL and elsewhere.

This is an issue I deal with in my work.

Is this gyp produced from fluidized beds or precipitators ?
I thought this stuff was "hot" and would react with moisture...

You know, I’m not a chemist and I’m unclear on how this all works.

I do know that lime is added to the exhaust of US coal plants where it combines with the sulfur gases to product calcium sulfate dihydrate or gypsum. My understanding is that gypsum produced in this way is a good deal more pure than most mined gypsum. It has been used for many years in American drywall, with no problems of which I’m aware.

I also believe there are similar waste or exhaust treatment processes that produce a similar material, but one that may be contaminated with chemicals that produce later problems. Some of these may have found their way into the Chinese drywall.

If you have additional insight on this issue, please freepmail me. I’d love to have some insight from someone more familiar with these processes.

No need to get the Left’s Thesaurus. All one needs is a copy of George Orwell’s “1984” to get the hang of how to label everything deceptively to fool the clueless voters.

When the first 200,000 pound/hr fluidized steam boiler was put in at Iowa State University, designed to burn high sulfur coal, there was a lot of talk in the university community about capturing the spent limestone for wall board. The stuff is quite similar to gypsum but a drop of water turns it into a boiling, fuming mass.
I've been reading about the Chinese gyp board and wondered if it was produced with the underflow or other lime-charged ash of a pollution control device.

I've been hearing a pro-cap and trade ad on talk radio, made up to sound like a news report. You have some head of a union, the Secretary of Energy and the CEO of DuPont. They tell us: 'Oh, cap and trade is going to create jobs', 'it's going to cut back on foreign oil importation' and re-build the US steel industry by the need to build wind turbines.

Bill Clinton has lead us into an era of lies, spin and propaganda that we've never seen before. That combined with a monolithic media, puts America close to the situation of a totalitarian country. It's no different for the 70% of the population, who don't listen to talk radio or read alternative news sources on the internet.

Traison de Clercs. We have the complete collapse of any sense of decency, morality and honesty among the elites of this country. Thank you Democrats, you are true leaders into the new age of barbarism. You'll also be the first to be put up against the walls and shot by your former pals.

Close? We're close all right -- it's not been all that long since we went over the edge.

This is an admission by the Left that they are losing the battle on Global Warming. So, as usual, the Left concludes not that the people don’t like what they’re saying, but that the people are too stupid to understand the debate and therefore they have to use different (preferably small ones, of course.) words to push the same agenda.

They may not openly make the claim of being “ze Master Race” but, they sure do act like they believe they are.

Ah, global warming, the scam that paid Gore big bucks, his personal wealth went from a measly 2 million to over 100 million. His “concern” over the climate is to be found in his bank account - he’s as dishonest and backhanded as his old man. The polar ice caps are growing but smarmy Al won’t profit with the truth, bah, he is sickening.
