Sen. Arlen Specter's switch to the Democratic Party has implications on a personal and national scale.
For Pennsylvanians, who must decide who will represent us in the U.S. Senate next year, the stakes are personal. A central question will be whether Mr. Specter can be trusted on anything.
In recent weeks, Mr. Specter has made numerous statements about how important it is to deny Democrats the 60th seat in the U.S. Senate and how he intended to remain a Republican to prevent one-party dominance in Washington. What Pennsylvanians have to ask themselves now is whether Mr. Specter is, in fact, devoted to any principle other than his own re-election.
On that question, there is much evidence. Mr. Specter began his political career as a Democrat, switched to the Republican side out of political convenience and has switched back for the same reason. On issue after issue, he has changed his position over the years to benefit his political calculations.
The most recent example is card check, which denies workers a secret ballot in labor-union elections. First Mr. Specter supported it, then he opposed it when faced with Republican primary opposition, and now, who knows? That's something Pennsylvania Democrats will have to contend with. Do they really want to nominate someone who will switch his principles on a dime?

Good luck Mr. Toomey. Pennsylvania, just like the rest of the northeast, is pretty much a commie dump now.
It is going to be a very heated election. I believe Spector will win as Pennsylvania has disappointed me numerous times over the last few years since Ridge left for Homeland Security position and a Democrat was able to get the governor’s seat at the next election. My state voted back Murtha and Obama??? What the heck!
Et tu, Arlen?
As the Good Book says “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”
A 79 year old man choose to betray his friends and his country to ally himself with a Marxist and a fascist political party.
He’ll have his precious photo-up today with Obama and the gloating will be palpable.
I can only hope that Collins, Snowe,McCain, Graham, Lugar and all the other GOP weinies who can’t understand why we “just can’t all get along” will join Arlen in his new political home.
May your chains NEVER rest lightly on you pukes.
Personally, I'm going to send some money to Mr. Toomey's election campaign.
Here's hoping other Freepers across the country will do the same, because what happens now in PA will affect all of us!
How long before obambi throws Specter under the bus?
I don’t live in PA, but recently had the opportunity to visit your beautiful state. Please, instead of being so down, get off your duff and do something!
I am but still very weary of the voters now a day. Toomey was our Rep for Lehigh Valley and is loved here but where else? That is the problem. Your post is 100 percent right as far as us doing something.
Specter’s betrayal is the most recent outbreak of
The Swine Flew
I'm wondering if Gov. Rendell plans to run for Senate in 2010. It would be the ultimate double-cross.
LLS
Just asking...
Its still an open question whether Specter will win the PA primary, even on the Dem side. At this point, Specter is just a useful idiot. The Dems will use him like a dirty rag for the next 1.5 years; after that, if they can get one of their own in, they won’t care.
Honestly, the man will be 80 years old in 2010. Does he really want to be another Strom Thurman? Specter has shown that he worships power over all and will do anything to hold on to it as long as he’s vertical. He should have at least gone out with some dignity.
Spector is now wearing the label of the party that he has been a part of from the beginning. That’s all. I do believe the comment about the commie northeast is correct.
I guess this proves Arlen agrees that Pa, is a state of “bitter clingers”.
Didn’t realize Specter was involved in the Warren Comm. Apparently came up with the very contrivercial *Magic Bullet* theory.

The territory north and east and including Pennsylvania should be purged from the union
Not sure if Fast Eddie wants to be a Senator but he's the King maker in PA. Arlen will have to deal with him on some level?
As a non-Hodgkin’s patient, let me say that the five year cure rate for Hodgkin’s sufferers is now 88%. Although Specter is 79 and should have gone out to pasture years ago, his prompt demise isn’t very likely. We need to find other, less grisly, ways to get rid of him.
As a survivor of Hodgkin’s, I hope that he’s in remission.
Arlen is our other useless senator. PA voters should be ashamed of themselves to see this once great state represented by such trash, both in the senate and in Harrisburg.
