A Minnesota Republican legislator has failed in his attempt to punish a Twin Cities group that helped line up an attorney for an accused Somali pirate.

The proposal would have denied non-profit tax status and prohibited grants to groups helping alleged terrorists or high-seas pirates.

House Minority Leader Marty Seifert was aiming his proposal at the nonprofit Somali Justice Advocacy Center, which has assisted the family of a man being held in connection with an attack on a U.S. ship in the Indian Ocean.

Would those be federal grants as in our tax dollars? That, along with being tax exempt means we’re paying for this little worm’s legal defense.

By choosing to bring Wally Moosie into the states instead of having him “dealt with” at sea, Obama created this situation, and Obama (and unfortunately we) must live with it.

There are all kinds of, well, legal legal defense foundations for folks ranking from super scummy to almost certainly angelic. GOP should keep its powder dry. I’m not convinced this is the hill to die on.

We’d end up paying for a public defender anyhow as the worm is allegedly penniless. If this is just a tax deductible charity, we are probably paying much less than we would for a public defender.
