Daily Presidential Tracking Poll
Rasmussen Reports ^ | April 22, 2009 | Rasmussen Reports

Posted on 04/22/2009 7:45:02 AM PDT by Scanian

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows that 34% of the nation's voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-two percent (32%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of +2 (see trends). On the Generic Congressional Ballot, it’s all tied—39% for the Democrats, 39% for the Republicans.

Most voters continue to believe that the financial and auto bailouts were a bad idea, but the Political Class disagrees. Sixty percent (60%) now believe the federal government has too much power and too much money.

The Presidential Approval Index is calculated by subtracting the number who Strongly Disapprove from the number who Strongly Approve. It is updated daily at 9:30 a.m. Eastern (sign up for free daily e-mail update). Updates also available on Twitter.

Overall, 54% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President's performance so far. Forty-six percent (46%) disapprove. For more Presidential barometers, see Obama By the Numbers.

For the Generic Congressional Ballot to be tied, even when Rasmussen gives Dems (typically) a +7 on the party identification weight — means that a LOT of Dems are crossing over.

*Excellent*

This is bad news for commies. Because...

A.) They had a 10 point lead some 6 months ago.

B.)The GOP has done nothing to warrant this gain - as they're prtetty much a sad sack bunch.

C.) It's a referundum on the left.

Sorry, I don’t see America waking up. Independents might have buyers remorse right now but that can change if the economy changes (which I don’t see happening).

And it’s still to early. It’s my belief there are a lot of people that are very thrilled with having a guy who goes around the world apologizing for US because they want other people to like them. That’s how liberals think. If people like US, well then they won’t attack us!

And the Pubes need to find leadership and have a cohesive message. Have they done that so far? Have they pushed their alternate budget till they are blue in the face that show true responsibility?

We have a dumbed down electorate. Common sense doesn’t seem to be too common them. If it did, Obama would NEVER have been elected because he made NO sense what so ever.

And Rasmussen weighs in favor of the Dems. The bailouts and spending are doing them in. The people hate that crap. The tea parties weren’t a success for nothing.

He typically gives a 7% advantage to the Democrats when he samples, since they have a registration advantage in the country.

They might be waking up, but what will happen to incumbents next year? Probably be reelected. Which is why we need term limits: http://pushbackuntil.com.

How I miss the old man. Art Laffer is on Beck right now talking about RR: “He thought everything through. He was REALLY an intellectual.” In contrast with Zer0, of course.

Far more interesting than the presidential numbers is a pair of polls only peripherally referred to in this article. If you follow links in the cited article you can read about polls on whether the Federal government has too much power and money and on the views of respondents on the recent Tea Parties. In those polls Rasmussen separated out the responses of people holding “mainstream” views and the “political class.” The “political class” was defined by responses to three questions. This is how Rasmussen defines the difference between “mainstream” and “political class”:

“Most Americans trust the judgment of the public more than political leaders, view the federal government as a special interest group and believe that big business and big government work together against the interests of investors and consumers. Only seven percent (7%) share the opposite view and can be considered part of the Political Class. “

The difference between the mainstream and political groups is truly astounding. For instance, 51% of the overall respondents had a positive view of the Tea Parties, versus 13% (!!) for the political class. Another example (in Rasmussen’s own words): “While 85% of Mainstream Americans say the government has too much power and money, just two percent (2%) of the Political Class agree.” 85% to 2 %?!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Rasmussen has described our enemy for us. They are about 7% of the population and they ARE the Obama Administration and the Democratic leadership in Congress. We now have to do as good a job of demonizing them as the left has of demonizing CEOs.

That number probably includes the hardest of the hard-core left. MSNBC viewers, homosexuals, pro-abortion freaks.

If we could get some real leadership in the Republican Party and recruit some legitimately fiscally conservative candidates, we could pull off a victory in 2010 that would make 1994 look minuscule. Unfortunately, I see no signs of such activity among the moribund Republican leadership.

It takes time for a characterization to set in. It took the Dems 5 years to trickle down Bush's impressions (with a little help from Katrina).

The double barreled dynamic of many viewing last Oct. as a sort of Financial 9/11 (giving the new President a lot of good will) and the fact it takes “flash-points” for many in the middle to develop an attitude.

All of us on the right (and left for that matter) that track events on a daily basis are already voting the way we vote. Those in the middle just surface scan news bytes. It will take a big event, or a series of smaller events to start the impression forming.

This is why it is critical for all conservatives to keep up the drumbeat of Obama=Socialist, even if it SEEMS it has no effect.

This is more like a river eroding a shore rather than an avalanche about to form (barring a new flash-point).

Bush got 3 gut-shots later in his Presidency. The torture issues merged with the Dem drumbeat on Iraq, Katrina became a disaster (on several levels) and then the economic collapse.

Obama may even be brought down by something that has little to do with why we as conservatives dislike him.

The thing is, you can't count on a “flash-point”, you have to keep slowly eroding the impression of Obama. If one occurs, then you have created a framework for the mushy middle to use.

The problem is going to be, IMO, that the economy might actually be resilient enough to survive and come back to an extent, just in time for Obama to claim his policies did it.........when in reality the economy comes back IN SPITE of his actions.

2010 is key. I think the middle people subconsciously want a President in one party and at least one of the houses in congress the opposite party. Big gains in the House are still possible. But it will take a good run of cards.

Does anyone know where I can go to get a timeline of the President’s actions/decisions/declarations since taking office?

Thanks,

“That number probably includes the hardest of the hard-core left. MSNBC viewers, homosexuals, pro-abortion freaks.”

You may be right about that (actually I think you hit it dead on), but sometimes victory is achieved in how you define your enemy. Right now, we could put together a massive coalition against a “political class” comprised of those hungry for more power and money to go to Washington. If we bring social issues into the picture, we will only make that coalition smaller. Let’s win the populist battle of slaying the Big Government Dragon first. If we push back the boundaries of the welfare state and weaken the stranglehold of the courts over our everyday lives, we will make progress on social issues by default (for example, voter choices on gay marriage may actually be allowed to stand).

Bring back the Reagan “Big Tent” and renew his battle against Big Government. That is a battle we are in a great position to win, if we can find the right leadership.

Where is the new Reagan? We have two to two and a half years to find him/her.

Check out the total approve vs. total disapprove numbers. Look at the trends. The total dissaprove is getting damn close to 50%. Rassmussen was pretty reliable in '08. Once you hit 50% negative it is damn hard to change peoples minds that have a bad opinion of you. They just don't like you and they keep on not liking you.

ACORN will have billions to play with. We'll have to win by 5% in real votes just to eke out a win.

Don't even get me started on the census. The GOP had 6 years to make tougher voter ID laws. They didn't. That will be the downfall of the Republic.

I think the Katrina damage (to Bush, anyway) was done within weeks after the storm. The window of opportunity for using an issue to damage a politician is narrow. That is why Iran Contra never got traction - it was strung out too much. The same with Whitewater. The time to use the huge deficit and rapidly expanding Federal expenditures is NOW, not three years from now when people have grown use to larger deficits, higher taxes, and new Federal entitlements. The Tea Parties were a great start. Now we need to strike while the iron is hot.

How about a 2 million person Debt Rally in Washington DC on July 4th? Everyone has the day off, and the Tea Parties proved we can turn out the people.

Bigger and better, baby.

“Our legions are brim-full, our cause is ripe:
The enemy increaseth every day;
We, at the height, are ready to decline.
There is a tide in the affairs of men
Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;
Omitted, all the voyage of their life
Is bound in shallows and in miseries.
On such a full sea are we now afloat;
And we must take the current when it serves,
Or lose our ventures.”

(Julius Caesar Act IV., Scene 3)
