Wading into the politically charged immigration debate, a group of colleges and universities is urging Congress to give illegal immigrants tuition aid and a path to citizenship in light of efforts in several states to block them.
The College Board, made up of 5,000 schools and best known for its SAT college admission tests, released a report Tuesday that cites a need for federal legislation that would open up in-state college tuition, financial aid and legal status to many illegal immigrants in the U.S.
Speaking publicly on the issue for the first time, the board is making its push after states in recent years have moved to bar illegal immigrants from paying in-state tuition and, in some cases, enrolling in their public colleges. It also comes as opponents are warning that immigration reform now could reduce already-scarce jobs and college enrollment slots in the ailing economy.
"This is a new area for us, but it was an easy call," said Thomas W. Rudin, a senior vice president for the College Board.
He noted the contradiction in which illegal immigrants who are legally entitled to a K-12 public education suddenly hit barriers when applying to college, even when many are "honor roll students, athletes, class presidents and valedictorians."
"We absolutely believe it's important for opening up economic opportunities," Rudin said.
Under House and Senate bills known as the Dream Act, illegal immigrants who entered the U.S. as children -- defined as age 15 and under -- and have lived here for five years could apply to the Homeland Security Department for conditional legal status after graduating from high school.

This is going to go over well with American citizens who can’t afford to sent their kids to college.

The Great State of Texas already grants in-state tuition to illegal aliens.
I assume that a future Republic of Texas would carry on the same program.
Every illegal alien, except perhaps the Kenyan druggie in our White House, should get a free trip home the first time they are caught, with no appeal. Also, they should be fingerprinted and permanently barred from citizenship if caught in our country illegally. Finally, we should put some serious enforcement effort behind catching and punishing employers who know or should have known that their employees are illegals.
On a related topic, we should make legal immigration and work visas easier for those who have something to contribute, so long as they remain on the correct side of the law.

If an illegal alien showed up in Germany...the last thing that he could ever hope to get...was a free college ticket. Same way for France, the UK, Japan, or Russia. You’d have to be a doped up College President to think of a scheme like this.
What else do you expect? Who wouldn’t be in favor of having the governemnt provide grants to your customers in order to buy your products? It’s just further rent seeking by the already bloated educational money machine.

And as of 2001, the State of Texas extended in-state tuition to illegal aliens.
Just think: you’ll be paying for illegals to go to schools you could never hope to attend. :)
