Pentagon Jams Web, Radio Links of Taliban

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration is starting a broad effort in Pakistan and Afghanistan to prevent the Taliban from using radio stations and Web sites to intimidate civilians and plan attacks, according to senior U.S. officials.

As part of the classified effort, American military and intelligence personnel are working to jam the unlicensed radio stations in Pakistan's lawless regions on the Afghanistan border that Taliban fighters use to broadcast threats and decrees.

U.S. personnel are also trying to block the Pakistani chat rooms and Web sites that are part of the country's burgeoning extremist underground. The Web sites frequently contain videos of attacks and inflammatory religious material that attempts to justify acts of violence.

The new push reflects the influence of Gen. David Petraeus, who runs the military's Central Command and has long been a major proponent of using psychological operations to reduce popular support for armed Islamist groups.

Under Bush this would have slammed as McCarthyism.

This explains why when I went to lurk at the DUmp it was “shut down” April 15th.

It is impossible, simply IMPOSSIBLE for me to believe that this jamming and disruption of communications is soemthing new as it seems to be reported here.

Disrupting communications between the front lines and HQ has always been the among the very most important actions taken in warfare.

This story appears to yet another fawning story by the slobbering media.

Yeah, that’s what I think, too.

I often wondered why past presidents didn’t do
more to fight the enemy in other ways.

Now I see how things like this can easily get out of hand.

Control of anything or anyone to this extent
just wasn’t the American way, til now.

Are we reverting to slavery days?

“how long before Obama can do this to us?”

Probably less time than it took Obama’s Dept of Homeland Security to shift its focus from Khalid Sheik Mohammed to Ron Paul.

Kinda tough to do for FM, AM is pretty easy..

Ground mounted jammers take a LOT of power. Airborne jammers, much less, but are limited by flight time.

Keep in mind, that when the US was beaming Radio Marte at Cuba - the Cubans sent a message by jamming pretty much the entire East Coast and a good part of the midwest - just to send the message.

From the wiki

In the early 1980s, the U.S. Government planned to create a radio station to be known as Radio Free Cuba, modeled on Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, with the hopes of hastening the fall of Cuban president Fidel Castro. Existing North American broadcasters objected strenuously to these plans, fearing that they would lead Cuba to retaliate by jamming existing commercial medium-wave broadcasts from Florida. These fears proved true in 1985, when Cuba-based transmitters briefly broadcast powerful signals on the medium wave band, disrupting U.S. AM radio station broadcasts in several states. Cuba continues to broadcast interference with U.S. broadcasts specifically directed to Cuba, in attempts to prevent them from being received within Cuba..

Afghan Resistance Statement
Why are the Americans closing down Jihadi media?
Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan

April 20, 2009

In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate

The American newspaper, the Wall Street Journal, quoting sources in the Pentagon, wrote the day before yesterday that those Internet sites and radio stations that according to them belong to or are attributed to the Taliban or are supporting them would be closed down.

The Pentagon has reasoned that these Internet sites and media sources not only have no legal licences but also make a large number of people side with the Taliban and incite them against America and its allies, and in doing so further weaken the Kabul administration.

First of all it should be made clear that the Americans for the past four to five years have made widespread and continuous efforts to silence and foil these websites and stations that they now wish to close down. This is not a new step or a fresh effort when they say they will disrupt the Taliban media sources or broadcasts.

In the past they have spared no efforts, Americans should feel really ashamed that despite their huge material strength and superiority they are afraid of a few local Internet sites and FM radio stations, which cannot operate outside a 20 km radius, that the Pentagon intervenes and regards these limited and few sources as a great threat.

This is despite the fact that the Americans alone in Afghanistan or outside it have started hundreds of radio and television stations and thousands of newspapers, publications and magazine to spread poisonous, false and hateful propaganda against the Taliban and to hide huge casualties and losses inflicted on them every day by the Taliban so that no publication, news agency or website could give the exact number of American losses of life and material on a daily basis in various parts of Afghanistan.

Those world organizations and institutions, which claim to uphold the freedom of expression, idea and pen, should condemn or foil this inadmissible American effort or at least seriously denounce it if they are really committed to these claims and slogans.

The author knows very well why the sites are going down, in my opinion.

A look at the Taliban:
