WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. officials, in deciding how to handle the lone surviving pirate from the hostage-taking of an American ship captain, must weigh the violence of the suspect's actions against his surprisingly young age.

This is completely ridiculous.

The very second he picked up an automatic weapon and put to sea to be a pirate, this guy crossed the line between a youth and a man.

Was the American Captain in any less danger because of this guy's age?

Were his bullets any less lethal?

And, why are we only looking at piracy with a life sentence. Doesn't Federal law state that if anyone dies during a criminal act, all criminals are equally responsible for the death?

I think the right charges are premeditated murder, kidnapping, and piracy. He would be lucky -- 200 years ago the sentence would be summary execution.

I can’t wait for the whole story about this incident to come out. That said, I would like to seem him given to Kenyan authorities where he will get a fair trial followed by swift punishment.

I don’t want the expense of his incarceration, trial, etc.

Accidentally drop him overboard. If he’s an innocent yute, the sharks won’t eat him.

I doubt anyone here is surprised and we were anticipating this anyway. Don’t worry. Obama will give the kid housing in Chicago and citizenship plus court martial of the Navy Seals.

In the 19th Century people this age went to sea all the time. Shoot, you could even find yourself reporting to a Midshipman of that age.

American gangs have recruited juveniles, for years, for some of their crimes -— precisely to ham string law enforcement efforts.

This is just great, how terrorists and pirates will use our liberal courts to tie us up in knots!

I apparently give the media WAY too much credit. I thought for sure that this article was going to be about the RIAA and internet piracy. I honestly didn’t expect any of the mainstream media outlets to question the use of deadly force, especially this soon. They make it perfectly clear why Obama hesitated to authorize the use of deadly force and blew our first opportunity; he thinks the exact same way this libtard at the AP thinks.

I still don’t understand how these 4 pirates of Somalia got to the Maersk Alabama. I haven’t had a lot of time to watch and read it all. But how did they board 300 plus miles out? Then have to leave in a life pod with their captive.

I must have missed a lot. Good job by the USN though.

Hmm, I thot in US, a US citizen youth even a 15 year-old can be tried as an adult if the crime is severe enough. Incredible that these guys attempted to hijack a boat and held the captain hostage for 5 days and now we are all worried about perps rights?!

Nah, they will probably let him come into the United States. After all he would likely be persecuted in Somalia (probably for getting caught). President Obama will do the right thing and adopt him as a foster son and bring him into the white House you wait and see.

Well if they are this bad at a young tender age, imagine what they will be like in 20 years? Might as well kill the homocidal little monsters before they get too experienced. Do Libtards ever understand the real world?

Not if this pirate turned against the other prirates and tried to help the americans try to negotiate their surrender as is now being reported.

the age is not an issue, but his cooperation with our Navy in the negotiations will become an issue in his prosecution.
