PHOENIX, April 13 (UPI) -- Arizona officials say illegal immigrants who boycott the U.S. Census would only be hurting themselves because it would mean fewer federal resources for them.
Even as Census Bureau officials have opened a public relations campaign to build trust with undocumented residents, immigrant advocates are threatening to boycott the Census as a protest against stepped-up law enforcement crackdowns, The Arizona Republic reported Monday.
Such a boycott could deny Arizona's financially hurting cities and towns much- needed federal tax dollars, which are doled out based on population, officials fear.
Phoenix City Councilman Michael Nowakowski warns against a census boycott, saying, "I believe it would have a huge impact, but the huge impact would be on the immigrant community."
"I know that people are afraid of the different raids we are having in the state, especially in Maricopa County, but we can assure them that this information (will be) perfectly safe," Vianey Celestino, an Arizona spokeswoman for the U.S. Census Bureau, told the Republic.

Seriously, though, would it be better for citizens if these folks DID or DID NOT register? What’s the upside for either case?

It gives states an incentive to allow illegals to flood in ... more congressional representation and federal $$$$
We tried to tell the rest of the country what was going on ten years ago.
And a rapist is an “undocumented boyfriend”.
If they’re smart they’ll boycott the census. No telling how many of us are willing to turn them in once they’re counted. :~D

That’s ok ACORN will count them away, in fact they will most likely count them two or three times!
So long as illegal immigration is winked at by the Federal government and foisted on states by mandate, there is no upside either way. If you don’t count them, less federal funds flow your way, although I am not sure it would impact claims based on services to illegals as in the welfare programs. I think it would impact general grants for schools, road and such. But if you count them, you are essentially doing a de factor legalization and your state becomes dependent on their presence, legally or illegally. It’s a conundrum, all right.
What I think ought to happen is give the illegals a certain grace period in which to tie up their affairs here and then send any and all home who came here illegally or were born to those who came here illegally. Those who voluntarily go home and go through the legal process should be allowed back in if they meet the qualifications. Those who refuse to leave and are caught should be sent back home and banned for at least a decade, if not life, from returning. At the end of that grace period, everyone who wants to access federal benefits, register to vote, or in any way take advantage of being here must be required to produce solid evidence of citizenship in terms of a birth certificate, naturalization papers or some other evidence. And by everyone, I mean EVERYONE. Draconian? Probably. But until we show we are serious about enforcing our own laws, we are only hurting ourselves. And in this time or worsening economic conditions, we should not be hosting millions of illegals doing the work our own citizens ought to be doing.

There were a few oversights in the Constitution that were understandable, given that the Founders didn’t have to deal with the relevant problems in their day. Among them is that citizenship by birth should only be granted if the parents are legal residents of the United States and the census should not count anyone not in the country legally.
