Dog's killing reopens old wounds
Houston Chronicle ^ | 04/09/2009 | Dane Schiller

All it took was the gunshot fired outside his Walker County home to trigger training ingrained in former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, the lone survivor of a dramatic battle in Afghanistan in 2005.

He did a sweep through the house. Checked on his mother. And bolted out the door, where he found dead his beloved Labrador retriever, Dasy, a dog given to him to help him recover from his own wounds and the loss of his fellow Navy comrades.

“I could tell she tried to get away because there was a blood trail,” Luttrell recalled in a phone interview Wednesday. “When I saw she was dead, the only thing that popped into my head was, ‘I’ve got to take these guys out.’ ”

Shrouded in darkness, Luttrell, who’d just been released from the hospital after another round of surgery, crawled under a fence, skirted a ditch and sneaked up on four strangers in a sedan who apparently killed the dog on a whim. Luttrell said they were oblivious as he raised a 9 mm pistol from about 25 yards away and had one of them dead to rights...

It's not a good idea to kill a Navy Seal's dog, especially when he's subject to combat flashbacks.

Terrible story. Where do sickos like this come from? IMHO, they need a serious beat down.

One of these miserable scumbags is hiding out right now.

I wonder how long it will take for some of Luttrell's brothers to turn him up.

There are at least five area dog killings in recent months that could be linked to the case, said Texas Ranger Steven Jeter.

“It could have been worse for both parties involved,” he said. “I wouldn’t advocate to the general public to do what he has done — to follow them at that rate of speed.”

“Marcus is trained to do certain things; he fell back on his training,” Jeter said.

Luttrell said he’s left town for now and wants to stay as far away as he can. Talking from a place he described as “the middle of nowhere,” Luttrell said he knows the attack on Dasy pushed him to a place where he doesn’t want to be.

“I was trying to talk myself out of being who I am,” he said. “Talking to myself about not doing the one thing I am good at.”

CAn you imagine the look on their faces if he caught up with them?

As a dog lover myself, I really feel for the guy about losing his dog like that, but somehow the possible ending cracks me up.

I must have missed any credible report about Marcus having anything like PTS or combat flashbacks. Please assist here, if you will.

Somebody please post when they catch & convict these pukes. I saw some of this on Beck, I can’t bear to hear about it, we are hard core dog people & the pics of sweet Daisy did me in.

I can’t follow this story, so hopefully I can find out the outcome here.

Of course, if they don’t catch & convict & something untoward happens to these useless pos’s in TX, pls post.

Probably illegal mexicans. Not kidding, dead serious. What do they give two craps about whatever they do to Americans’ property or animals? Or people for that matter. They get totally hammered and drive drunk and obliterate US families and all they suffer is deportation at worst. Happens all the time where I am and we are thousands of miles from the damn border.

I read Marcus Luttrell's book Lone Survivor , which contains amazing accounts of Navy Seal training and of Luttrell's experience in Afghanistan. I was left with regret that Americans of this caliber were wasted in an uncivilized Muslim hellhole like Afghanistan. It would be so much better to drop our undocumented Kenyan Muzzie sympathizer and his accomplices Pelosi, Reid, et al. in the Hindu Kush and let them use their diplomatic brilliance and multicultural talents to sooth the feelings of the Taliban.

Since his household was under fire, wouldn’t he have been within rights to fire back; at the time it may not have been apparent that the dog was the intended target.

Not second guessing the guy, just curious if that would have been possible and LEGAL, assuming a neighbor’s house wasn’t in the line of fire.

Police just sent him home.

Good thing that in Texas a defense for murder is “he needed killin’.”

He could have gotten in serious trouble in many other states for leaving his property to hunt down a group who’d killed his dog. Also he risked getting shot himself, which probably wouldn’t have been very helpful to his wife.

He should have shot them, period.

Also, since when is “6 months” for a sentence a “felony?”

Used to be a year and a day, unless someone changed the law and didn’t send me a postcard.

Hope there is a followup story that can be posted here.

PS: If someone shot my daughter’s dog or my son’s dog, they would learn the meaning of gun control (which is putting about a hundred rounds in their ass in 10 seconds). My daughter used to run a shooting range and my son is a combat veteran of Iraq and a police officer. I just plink targets with a 22 rifle.

Depends on local law. Normally if someone is shooting into your house, you have the right to return fire (One of my neighbors is alive because he only shot into our window with plastic pellets. They cops did not think kindly of this druggen ahole and told him that he faced jail in the future if he repeated it).

Once I determined that these were not threatening objects, I put my rifle away and called the police.

If you only hear a shot, it is a hard call about shooting at people where you do not see a weapon. If they pull a weapon on you, then fire away.
