The church-affiliated Texas Christian University has announced plans to allocate apartment housing on its Fort Worth campus for homosexual students and their supporters.
According to a report in the city's Star-Telegram newspaper, the school plans to open a section of the Tom Brown-Pete Wright apartments for "lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender students and allies."
The school also will have two living groups that are designated "Christian-based" and others for fine arts and other themes, the report said.
(Story continues below)
"It's a change for students to be part of a unique experience," David Cooper, associate chief of residential life, told the newspaper.
Shelly Newkirk, a TCU sophomore who applied to create the homosexual residence lifestyle, told the newspaper her vision is that homosexuals and straight students will interact and hang out.
Cooper said the university opened its "living-learning communities" to student ideas.
Others coming up include the "Leadership and Strengths Community" for those who want to lead, environmentalists who are collecting in the "Green House" and the Health and Wellness Community.
"I think it's wonderful that TCU is offering this," Nancy Tubbs of the LGBT Resource Center at the University of California-Riverside told the paper.
The report said a fraternity for homosexuals opened at the University of North Texas in 1998 but lasted only a few years before closing.
On the paper's forum page, the reaction ranged widely.
"So let me get this straight. TCU now supports segregation?" wrote one contributor.

“TCU is affiliated with the Christain (sic) Church (Disciples of Christ), a denomination that does not have anti-gay policies”
They’ve abandoned God, then.
What a wonderful idea. Can’t wait for their own football team and then wrestling. TCU has way too much money to spend.
I’ll bet that move will do wonders for their fund raising efforts!
It’s already recognised as a lib “church” like the episcopals.
They need to remove the “C” from their name.
Good lord. I’ve seen everything. I’m goin’ to bed and hope I wind up in a more sensible nation tomorrow. meh
When Americans elected a three-time draft-dodger to be POTUS in 1992; that is when I saw America fall into the abyss. Well we made one step forward when we elected & reelected GWB but we have gone two steps backward with this clown!

Not having “Anti-gay policies”? Is that how the left describes sin? Not having anti-(blank) policies??
Hey TCU. In the name of Jesus, drop the “Christian” in your name and just call yourself Texas University. You are apostate and are not Christian.
TCU hasn’t been “Christian” for a long time now.
It’s an affluent, secular school, with a token and liberal department of religion.
Some of the university’s academic departments are quite good, and it is for them, not for any religious reason, that parents send their kids there.
Not really. You’re probably thinking of the “United Church of Christ,” which is very liberal but was also embarrassed by association with the notorious Rev. Wright.
Most Disciples of Christ/Christian Churches are on the conservative side. They will be appalled at the TCU decision.
Buggery Hall? Wilde Hall? Sodom?

quite a few references here put it as liberal
First off newbie, welcome to Free Republic.
Second off, one of the first things you learn around here is please don’t make generalizations about people or organizations. Not all things are the same everywhere in this country.
As a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for many years here in Texas, I can tell you that TCU is not thought of highly by many of congregations particular outside of the big cities. My congregation no longer sends support to the Bright School of Divinity because of the liberal policies of TCU. My congregation also does not support the Christian Church on the national level for the same reasons.
Many Disciples congregations here in Texas are very conservative, but we would be judged “liberal” when compared against the Baptist or Church of Christ. The reason is we recognize the role of women in the worship service and allow women to serve as ministers, elders and to serve in church offices. I know that rubs some “conservative” denominations the wrong way, but I personally do not have a problem with it. Just because a religion’s national organization does not have an “anti-gay” policy does not mean the individual congregation are “pro-gay”. Does my congregation have an “anti-gay” policy, no we don’t. We also don’t have a policy against liberals, Democrats, blacks, hispanics or Martians. Anyone who walks through the doors of our congregation is welcome to worship with us and partake of the Lord’s Supper, which we partake of each and every Sunday. Our philosophy is we do not condone the sin, but will not turn our back to the sinner.
Another fact for you to consider, (RVN Airplane Driver maybe be able to back me up on this) despite its reputation as a “cow town” Fort Worth as a city is pretty liberal. It is a blue-collar town with a heavy influence from Unions. The Star Telegram is a very liberal rag. That liberal influence tends to bleed itself into all aspects of the community include so call religious schools like TCU. I think the one exception maybe Southwestern Theological Seminary. In fact our current senior minister for my Disciples congregation came from Southwestern and no Bright.
All this is not to chastise you, but to inform you. Which is what to me Free Republic is all about. You will be able to find things out here from people that you will not find in the MSM or through an internet search.
“First off newbie [..] not to chastise you, but to inform you.”
Deft change of tone there! I did a web search & they show up liberal. If your particular church isn’t, then that would be like a few episcopal churches. That’s great. If it isn’t liberal, then they will replace the Dean now, or cut off all funding, and/or ensure that their name isn’t associated with it, yes?
If no, then you would have what is known as a leftarded leadership, probably slowly infiltrated over the last 30-40 years. That would be a problem. Not something to be ignored, or swept under the rug.
I now await the suggestion from the same liberals to simply reapply the 'C' to stand for 'Carnality', 'Corruption', 'Contagious', 'Chlamydia', or 'Chancre'.
Nah, we've always maintained that our school motto is "Don't let that middle name fool you!"
