ARLINGTON -- Former President George W. Bush received a strong standing ovation from Rangers fans as he walked to the mound on Monday afternoon at the Ballpark in Arlington to throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day.

Bush was joined at the mound by Texas Gov. Rick Perry and three military heroes: Gen. Jeffery Hammond of the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Hood, 1st. Sgt. David McNerney of Houston -- winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor in Vietnam -- and Petty Officer Marcus Luttrell, winner of the Navy Cross for heroism in Afghanistan.

Bush threw a strike to Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton, who was squatting behind home plate.

"Laura and I are excited to once again cheer on our home team at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, and I'm honored Tom Hicks and Nolan Ryan invited me to throw out the first pitch," Bush said in a statement. "There's no better place to spend Opening Day than back home among fellow fans of the Texas Rangers."

Bush, joined at the park by his wife, Laura, was making his first appearance at the Ballpark since 2000, when he was still the governor of Texas. He was elected President of the United States in 2001 and served two terms in office.

There are still a lot of Americans living in this country. A lot of them are baseball fans.

This really made me smile. Most people have no idea how nice and smart George Bush is.

It feels good to talk about Bush in the present tense again. I really miss the good old days.

My President pitches out the first pitch.

He is STILL my president. If you consider the foreign born usurper and domestic enemy in the White House, Bush doesn't have a successor. So as far as I am concerned, he will continue being my president.

It’s worth posting First Sergeant McNerney’s official Medal of Honor citation:

1st Sgt. McNerney distinguished himself when his unit was attacked by a North Vietnamese battalion near Polei Doc. Running through the hail of enemy fire to the area of heaviest contact, he was assisting in the development of a defensive perimeter when he encountered several enemy at close range. He killed the enemy but was painfully injured when blown from his feet by a grenade. In spite of this injury, he assaulted and destroyed an enemy machinegun position that had pinned down 5 of his comrades beyond the defensive line. Upon learning his commander and artillery forward observer had been killed, he assumed command of the company. He adjusted artillery fire to within 20 meters of the position in a daring measure to repulse enemy assaults. When the smoke grenades used to mark the position were gone, he moved into a nearby clearing to designate the location to friendly aircraft. In spite of enemy fire he remained exposed until he was certain the position was spotted and then climbed into a tree and tied the identification panel to its highest branches. Then he moved among his men readjusting their position, encouraging the defenders and checking the wounded. As the hostile assaults slackened, he began clearing a helicopter landing site to evacuate the wounded. When explosives were needed to remove large trees, he crawled outside the relative safety of his perimeter to collect demolition material from abandoned rucksacks. Moving through a fusillade of fire he returned with the explosives that were vital to the clearing of the landing zone. Disregarding the pain of his injury and refusing medical evacuation 1st Sgt. McNerney remained with his unit until the next day when the new commander arrived. First Sgt. McNerney’s outstanding heroism and leadership were inspirational to his comrades. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of his country.

I think there is a great deal we can be unhappy about with regard to GWB, not least of which is the current state of the GOP. Nevertheless, there was a dignity, honesty, and wholesome goodness about the man, and the former first lady. I felt infinitely more safe with him in the White House than I do with this creep, and far more positive in general about the country. Every day since Obama took office has been a frustrating, demoralizing, or frightening one. I hate where our country is going, I cry when I think what is happening to our liberties and sovereignty, our collective notions of government's role in our lives, and the ruinous, socialistic debt being piled upon generations yet unborn. Despite all his missteps, mistakes, and his comfort with big-government conservatism...I miss Bush.
