The Valkyrie' actor started plans to produce the 60s western - which is about two lovable bank robbers - last year and hopes to star in the with his close friend John Travolta.
A source said: "It has been a pet project of his that has been on the back-burner for years. But now he's ready to go, and will most likely happily eschew the enormous salary that he normally commands."
When the movie goes ahead Tom will revive the role of Sundance - previously played by Robert Redford - and John, 55, is expected to play Cassidy.
A friend told Britain's Daily Mirror: "Butch and Sundance is a labour of love for Tom. He was eight years old when he saw the original and it made an impression that has stayed with him all his life. He can't wait to get to work."

This would be like someone trying to do a remake of Casablanca.
These actors live in La-La land.
Hollywood doesn’t have a creative bone in its body anymore.
Seeing Tom Cruise and “butch” in the same sentence stunned me.
Why in the world... is there no more imagination left in hollyweird?
Maybe they’ll hit a rock when they jump off that cliff this time.
Soon to be a new term in the entertainment lexicon:
“Cruising the Shark”
You mean, the one where Ilse dumps her husband and Bogart and runs off with the french singer to live a liberated lesbian life in...Casablanca?
Butch Xenu and the Fair Game kid
Shouldn't it be renamed "L. Ron Hubbard and the Scientology Kid" ?
Because ‘Valkyrie’ was such a hit and won a whole bunch of Oscars?
When is that spaceship coming for him? What a kookburger. And while the camera LOVES him, I’ve never seen him in a movie where I wasn’t thinking, “Hey! That’s Tom Cruise!” versus the actual CHARACTER he was PAID to be playing.
Even Bruce Willis (a BRILLIANT actor by comparison) IS ‘John Mc Clane’ in the Die Hard movies. Yeesh!
Cruise, you insolent snot. Why don’t you go remake Flop Gun.
Actually, I was thinkin' Brokeback Mountain Part 2...
Ugh. What a waste.
Are they still stuck in the closet?
Cruise and Travolta? Forget Butch and Sundance. How about the “The Gay Caballeros”???
Most of Hollywood’s remakes have been bombs and utterly void of anything good.
Cheaper by the Dozen (Bonnie Hunt and Steve Martin) once exception I can think of. The original was great and the remake was very good and fun.
Same difference, though.
