Huckabee, Northern Virginia doesn't think like us [disses *ALL* No. Va. residents] [McDonnell quiet]

Republican governor hopeful Bob McDonnell is being criticized by state Democrats for not condemning comments made by former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee (R) at a campaign rally last week.

BY HOLLY HOBBS

Huckabee, who spoke at a campaign fundraising event in Tazewell County in southwest Virginia, told rally goers that people in Northern Virginia aren't “necessarily thinking the same way folks like you and me think.”

Huckabee went on to say that those living near the Beltway “may never fully understand how hard it is for a lot of people to put a paycheck together to feed a family.”

Areas like Tazewell County are facing unemployment rates of about 20 percent, nearly three times the average statewide. Northern Virginia's unemployment rate is 5.2 percent.

Huckabee added that it was unlikely that Republican candidate McDonnell will do well in Northern Virginia during the Nov. 3 election because of the strength of the Democratic party here.

Huckabee said if McDonnell wins he will remember that the rest of Virginia voted him into office: “I bet he'll never forget that the primary job he has is not to help the people who already have it made; it's to help the people who are struggling.”

Following Huckabee's comments at the March 30 rally, Democratic candidate for governor Creigh Deeds condemned Huckabee's comments April 3 and criticized McDonnell for not doing the same.

Huckabee said if McDonnell wins he will remember that the rest of Virginia voted him into office: “I bet he'll never forget that the primary job he has is not to help the people who already have it made; it's to help the people who are struggling.”

And there aren't people in Northern Virginia who are struggling too? I can understand Huck poking at Beltway liberals, but dissing all Northern Virginia residents, regardless of political affiliation, is over the line. As for McDonnell, his silence on the matter will be remembered.

He is right - I think Huck is both a huckster, and a big government nanny-stater. I am pretty sure he doesn’t think he is.

So clearly, we do not think the same.

Huckabee just plain talks too much.
Much of the time he does not know
much about his subject.
I think he should just go home to Arkansas
and help people to lose weight or something.

It is no worse than saying “People in California don’t think like us” or, more targetedly, “People in San Fran Sisco” don’t think like us.”

It more true than not, and I am People in California who DOES think like us.

Northern Va is beginning to look Asia, with Chantilly/Fairfax Co beginning to looking like the golden triangle. All the pharmacists at CVS are either southeast Asian or southwest Asian. We have a good mixture of Koreans and Vietnamese. I spoke some Chinese to a girl working in a grocery store and she corrected me to the fact that she was Vietnamese.

There are several new Korean establishments in Chantilly including Lotte grocery store (which I love btw).

I want to stress that I have nothing against Asians, just noting the changes that have occured since I moved here 12 years ago.

So the rats have been criticizing the men and women in uniform, conservative areas, etc. But let a republican commentator talk bad about No. Va. and all hell breaks loose. Ridiculous. Although it is a typical liberal reaction, just like the Macaca comment.

I’m NOT a defender of Huckabee, but this strikes me as much ado about nothing. He’s obviously talking about all the rich DCers, yuppies, and bureaucrats, who have moved into Northern Virginia and turned it far to the left, not the people who just happen to live there.

Huckabee has said a lot of worse things than this, IMHO. I wouldn’t vote for him for dog catcher, but let’s give him a break on this.

It’s like saying that California is totally loony. As it also happens, California is one of the biggest states for Freepers, including Jim Robinson. Just look at the fundraising numbers.

So, of course there are exceptions. But California is still dysfunctional beyond belief. And Northern Virginia is full of fat cats who work in DC as well as decent people.

That’s good.

Because not only is wifey from Vietnam and a U.S. citizen, but older political surveys I’ve read had the Vietnamese in American being about 80 percent favorable to George Bush and generally fairly conservative.

Of ALL ethnic groups in America, only Filipinos were more reliably conservative than the Vietnamese.

I have personally observed Indians to be much more swayed by Democrat politics. They want to “play ball”. And we have a lot of Indians in Fairfax, PW, and Loudoun.

Does this mean Terry McAuliffe can count on your vote? This TRUTH made you so angry that you will do, what... vote Democrat?

No.

I would never vote for that Clintonista carpetbagger under any circumstances.

Silence?

The McDonnell campaign issued a statement within hours, if not minutes of when this hit.

I'm not enamored of everything McDonnell has done, but this is simply another media/leftist instigated witch hunt.

...people in Northern Virginia aren't “necessarily thinking the same way folks like you and me think.”

Being a native Virginian from Hanover County, it's a non- issue. Hell, the people who have gone west end don't think like people in east Henrico County.

Me neither. He was probably my fifth choice in the presidential candidate lineup last year (with McCain 6th and Rudy 7th). I'd still much rather have seen him in the White House than Obama....no matter how often he trips over his tongue.

Asians were strong supporters of Reagan in the 1980s. However the children of Asian Reagan voters are Messiah worshippers. One big reason why young Asians are Dems is because they perceive the GOP as a country club for white Southern Baptists who care only about banning gay marriage and little else. Conservative can't ignore the Asian vote. The older generation of Asians may be apathetic about politics, but the younger generation is not. Asian Americans are turning into the quintessential suburban swing voter.

Tim Kaine poked fun of the funny accents of SW Va in 2005. It didn’t hurt him.
