A GOP supporter waved a broom Tuesday at Rivals Sports Bar and Grill after Republicans swept the competitive Albemarle County Board of Supervisors races. Republican Rodney S. Thomas pulled ahead of Democrat David L. Slutzky, the incumbent, taking the Rio District seat. And Duane Snow, a Republican businessman and grandfather of 13, sailed past a Democrat and an independent for the Samuel Miller seat.... Snow said that his commitments include “looking for wastes and inefficiencies. I’m going to listen to the citizens of Albemarle County.” Snow received more votes than Democrat Madison Cummings and independent John Lowry. The Rio victor,...

Last night was an interesting evening indeed on the political front. As I’m sure most of you know by now, turnovers in New Jersey and Virginia seem to spell C-H-A-N-G-E in a way that conservatives can get behind it. But, being the communications-focused person that I am (did you catch my series on the messianic propaganda of Obama and Mao?), I really sat up and took notice of another interesting shift in the political winds that occurred last evening. ABC aired the premier of it’s new series, “V”—a contemporary remake of the big 80s hit. For those of you that...

Awesome night! The left will try their best to minimize the damage done but the bluedog Democrats are now on notice….pass fiscally irresponsible bills like ObamaCare and your toast. As for NY-23, a few good articles…first from Roger Simon: Now I realize that the surprise loser there, Doug Hoffman, ran as a Conservative, not a Republican. But I submit in this case that was a distinction without a significant difference because virtually all the Republican establishment had lined up behind Hoffman by the day of the election. So why – in what was clearly a Republican year – did Hoffman lose? Well,...

NEW YORK — Third party candidates could upend two major races in off-year elections Tuesday, and the success of those candidacies is a warning shot fired at both major parties by voters angry at government and disillusioned by politics as usual. In the New Jersey governor’s race, independent Chris Daggett has gone from afterthought to player in a contest pitting the unpopular incumbent, Democrat Jon Corzine, against Republican Chris Christie. In New York’s 23rd Congressional district, where longtime Republican Rep. John McHugh stepped down to be Army secretary, prominent national Republicans have snubbed GOP candidate Dede Scozzafava, a state assemblywoman...

Democratic enthusiasm for President Barack Obama's liberal domestic agenda—particularly for a government-run health insurance program—could wane after the results of the gubernatorial elections next Tuesday in Virginia and New Jersey. GOP victories in either state will tell Democrats in red states and districts that support for Obama's policies is risky to their political health. The more significant is the open race for governor in Virginia, a purple state. The Washington Post poll released Monday showed 55% support for Republican Attorney General Bob McDonnell and 44% for Democratic State Senator Creigh Deeds. The president is trying to reverse these numbers by...

Reporting from Kennett Square, Pa. - As he is quick to point out, President Obama is presiding over two wars, a sour economy and an epic fight to rework the nation's healthcare system. Now tack on a trio of state and local political races. With an off-year election fast approaching, Obama is stepping up his commitment to Democratic candidates in hopes that an infusion of campaign charisma might pump up turnout. What the party is finding, though, is that the electricity of 2008 is tough to recapture.

President Obama has returned to the campaign trail. He is appearing in television advertisements in New Jersey this week on behalf of Gov. Jon S. Corzine, the embattled Democrat struggling to win a second term. And he campaigned on Thursday evening alongside R. Creigh Deeds, the candidate for governor fighting to keep Virginia in the Democratic column. The New Jersey and Virginia races for governor are the only big-ticket political contests for 2009. And fairly or not — Mr. Obama’s advisers are not alone in arguing that the significance of these races does not extend beyond the boundaries of either...

RICHMOND, April 6 -- Ousted Virginia Republican leader Jeffrey M. Frederick said Monday he will probably run for party chairman again in May, setting up another clash with the GOP's gubernatorial nominee, Robert F. McDonnell, as Republicans struggle to unite for the November election. Frederick said in an interview that he does not think the party's leaders, McDonnell among them, will be able to turn around years of Republican losses in Virginia. "I'm very concerned about the party's ability to win in the fall," Frederick said. "The current track we are on will not provide the results that we need."...

Republican governor hopeful Bob McDonnell is being criticized by state Democrats for not condemning comments made by former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee (R) at a campaign rally last week. BY HOLLY HOBBS Huckabee, who spoke at a campaign fundraising event in Tazewell County in southwest Virginia, told rally goers that people in Northern Virginia aren't “necessarily thinking the same way folks like you and me think.” Huckabee went on to say that those living near the Beltway “may never fully understand how hard it is for a lot of people to put a paycheck together to feed a family.” Areas...

RICHMOND, April 4 -- Virginia Republicans ousted their embattled chairman Jeffrey M. Frederick Saturday at a tense meeting that left the party bitterly divided as its leaders try to staunch years of election losses and head into the state's crucial November elections. Frederick's dismissal came after he repeatedly refused to resign despite public requests from nearly every top-ranking Republican officeholder in Virginia. They accused him of incompetence and mismanagement.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Virginia Democrats are eagerly pouncing on Mike Huckabee for telling an audience in Appalachia that voters in northern Virginia "aren't necessarily thinking the same way folks like you and me think." Huckabee made the remarks in southwest Virginia's Tazewell County on Monday while campaigning with Bob McDonnell, the Republican candidate for governor. His appearance was recorded and posted on YouTube by a state Democratic operative. "They have never fully understood how hard it is for a lot of people to put a paycheck together, be able to feed a family," Huckabee said. "Some folks up there near...

Prince William Board of County Supervisors Chairman Corey A. Stewart, the politically ambitious architect of the county's illegal immigration crackdown, said he plans to run for lieutenant governor next year. It is well known that Stewart, a conservative Republican, is eyeing higher office. He frequently has been mentioned as a potential successor to U.S. Rep. Thomas M. Davis III (R-Va.). And now that Davis has decided not to seek reelection, Stewart has declared himself the "preeminent Republican in Northern Virginia." Stewart said he spent the past month weighing his options while watching the General Assembly reach a virtual stalemate on...

RICHMOND — Prince William Board of County Supervisors Chairman Corey A. Stewart, who engineered the county's crackdown on illegal aliens last summer, plans to run for lieutenant governor next year. Mr. Stewart, a Republican, told The Washington Times the job would give him the platform to pressure lawmakers into doing more to crackdown on illegal aliens. "By running statewide it gives me the bully pulpit to do that," he said. While several Republicans are said to be considering bids for attorney general next year, Mr. Stewart, a Minnesota native and Georgetown University graduate, is the party's highest-profile figure to indicate...
