President Barack Obama's unprecedented critique of past American behaviour towards Europe aroused predictable ire among his conservative foes and praise from liberals in the US.
Phone lines to Right-wing talk radio shows were buzzing with angry attacks on the commander-in-chief for alleged "treachery".
Mr Obama may be rebuilding some frayed alliances abroad but his comments are the latest blow to his erstwhile aspirations of developing a post-partisan political atmosphere at home.
His references to American "arrogance" and its "dismissive" attitude were viewed by some commentators as an unwarranted attack on his homeland while travelling abroad.
In a speech in France, a country that has been a bastion of anti-US sentiment in recent years, the President said: "In America, there is a failure to appreciate Europe's leading role in the world. Instead of celebrating your dynamic union and seeking to partner with you to meet common challenges, there have been times where America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive.

The sad truth is that there are still way too many actual “elitists” in both major political parties in the U.S., and conservatism must successfully get around this ongoing fact, if they are ever going to become a major political player in the U.S. in the future. This, plus a gazillion other serious, “pro-leftist” barriers to actual conservative success.
As a foreigner I really hate it when Americans try to endear themselves to me by bad-mouthing their country or apologizing for being American.
I would NEVER apologize for my country to a foreigner, even if one of them were wrong. I would rather die. It’s undignified and unnecessary and gives foreigners all the wrong ideas. Foreigners don’t like one of my countries? They can suck rocks.
So why do you Yanks do this? Lots of you do when you travel overseas. Stop it! Stop it now.
And why are you allowing your President to do this? It isn’t going to endear him or the United States to foreigners any better than it does when ordinary American tourists bad mouth their country or apologize to us for being Americans. Foreigners prefer to be told to suck rocks rather than receive an apology from an American President for being American. How undignified!
Even if he is a Lefty, somebody needs to gently explain this to him: he is embarrassing himself and his country by doing this. We aren’t impressed at all. If anything, his efforts will be held in well-deserved contempt.
Never apologize for your country. Never bad mouth your country. Don’t do it.

I guess that the saying” My country, right or wrong” has been replaced by “ F**k this S*it”.
It might let them know and understand that there are millions of people in the US that do not appreciate Obama trashing our country and the sacrifices we have made over the decades for Europe. Then again, it might do nothing..so why bother.
I choose to let our government know when they have stepped over the line. You do what suits you.
