As a foreigner I really hate it when Americans try to endear themselves to me by bad-mouthing their country or apologizing for being American.
I would NEVER apologize for my country to a foreigner, even if one of them were wrong. I would rather die. It’s undignified and unnecessary and gives foreigners all the wrong ideas. Foreigners don’t like one of my countries? They can suck rocks.
So why do you Yanks do this? Lots of you do when you travel overseas. Stop it! Stop it now.
And why are you allowing your President to do this? It isn’t going to endear him or the United States to foreigners any better than it does when ordinary American tourists bad mouth their country or apologize to us for being Americans. Foreigners prefer to be told to suck rocks rather than receive an apology from an American President for being American. How undignified!
Even if he is a Lefty, somebody needs to gently explain this to him: he is embarrassing himself and his country by doing this. We aren’t impressed at all. If anything, his efforts will be held in well-deserved contempt.
Never apologize for your country. Never bad mouth your country. Don’t do it.
I guess that the saying” My country, right or wrong” has been replaced by “ F**k this S*it”.
I agree, and we're not sure he is an American. He doesn't like us much.
Thank you DieHard for the admonishment and good reminder. Speaking of which, in the 60s we were in Subic Bay, Philippines (USS Ranger) as many sailors were. We checked out a fairly large open sailboat from Special Services much like a sailing whaleboat and passed under the stern of several UK destroyers rafted up (moored side-by-side), among them were NZ and Australian ships.
We hollered if there was anyone that would like a break and several ANZAC sailors waved us over to the stern of one destroyer, asked their OOD for permission, climbed over the rail and hopped aboard. We were a mixed bag, we Yanks were all enlisted, there were two Aussie officers and two NZ NCOs. Had a great time. No stiffness or uncomfortable conversation just good bantering as expected. The two officers did a lot of line handling obeying whoever the helmsman of the moment was, it was great.
There certainly were no apologies for our respective countries in those days! The result of that? I’ve always held you folks in high esteem, belittling one’s country only results in contempt as you point out.
sorry but not all us YANKS do this...you’ve probably run into America dissing liberals who curse anything that has to do with the US because of how strong she is. there are plenty of them out there and THEY not us elected our current president.
with all due respect, foreigner, don’t lump us all into one group—if you ever ran into me, you would hear nothing but praise and patriotism for my beloved country as i’m sure you would hear from most of the patriots here...if you haven’t noticed, our hands are tied from having any effect on our sitting Traitor-in-chief. please don’t wag your finger at us...go to DU and tell them instead.
You mean why do LIBERAL Yanks do that? The rest of us are proud of our country.
"Never apologize; it's a sign of weakness."
U.S. Cavalry Captain Nathan Brittles
Your comments are wise. This apologizing is a small part of the naive philosophy you might know as “multiculturism” as it is practiced in our universities. We are to be submissive and apologetic for our arrogance and ignorance of others which supposedly insults people in other cultures. In reality, it makes us look like fools—which is actually fairly correct now that I think about it.
