China-made mobiles will go dead soon
3 Apr 2009, 0346 hrs IST, Vinay Madhav, TNN
BANGALORE: China-made mobile handsets that have flooded the grey market are to be phased out within the next 10 days. These handsets are seen as a security threat, prompting the move.
The department of telecommunication has sent a communication to Cellular Operators Association of India asking them to block services to handsets that have 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers. It is only the Chinese mobiles that have 15-digit numbers; other handsets come with 16-digit IMEIs.
The problem arises because on service providers computers, the Chinese handsets show up as having an endless list of digits as their IMEI numbers.
Due to this, these handsets cannot be traced. Also, it has been found that usually over 1,000 of these handsets share a single IMEI number. This has posed a big problem for the police.

Ping!
Wow - wnder if this action has something to do with the chicom electronic/cyber spy network that was discovered recently.
The bitch off all this is that when the Chinese call tech support they will wind up talking to some guy name “Reggie” that is based in Mumbai....
Can’t hear me now.
“...can’t be traced”....”a security threat”...
Ooooooo.....Big Brother is not happy .......
I wont be surprised if does. Huawei and ZTE must be thrown out of India. We for one give these Chicom pigs too much business. We should also ban Dell and all the other Computer manufacturers and OEMS from using China-made components (at a certain level of computing logic). What I mean is transistors are ok but Chips or any components capable of computation that are made in China must be banned out right.
Actually, India is banning them because the cell phones may be controlled by the Biggest Brother in the world - the filthy ChiComs.
BTW, China is the largest manufacturer/distrbutor of terrorist supplies in the world. The have been warned re: the sae in Iraq and Afghanistan as well.
I have a HP computer that had a string of the bum video cards...the noisy 9500s that overheated due to fan issues.
Total of 5 calls for 3 or 4 cards, lost track...only one guy who sounded like he came from the North American continent and I’d wager decent money he was Canadian. Not that I mind, but eh...
The first one was funny tho, STRONG Indian accent and gave some sort of token American name, I forget what it was but something super common like Steve or Mark. Before the call ended he was asking me if I watched movies, how close I lived to Hollywood, and if I’d ever been there. I was pretty amused, but unfortunately had to disappoint the curious tech...I live in GA and never been further west than Pueblo, CO!
That IS the “Big Brother” I was referring to.
“Chips or any components capable of computation that are made in China must be banned out right.”
Agree but don’t see it in the foreseeable future. Nobody, incl. this administration or the previous one, wants to speak truth to power.
Got it
If the chicoms are irritated, I’m thrilled.
Good for the Indians!!
I guess they still have cojones to act as they dont have China financing their debt.
The old wisdom of being neither a borrower nor a lender has never been more true than today.
Imagine if US had zero external debt and zero net trade deficit.
Imagine then how the US would react to the ChiComs. We would not put up with even an ounce of crap from them.
On Thanksgiving morning I needed to call Time Warner Cable because of a modem problem....while Punjab (altho I think I was actually talking to a Filipino) was killing time during the diagnosis phase, he was full of questions about eating and preparing turkey.
dittos
Thank you Tiger Likes Rooster for the ping.
I appreciate it.
