Sales and Use Tax Rate Increases on April 1, 2009

Effective April 1, 2009, the State sales and use tax rate increases by 1%. In addition, if you are in a city or county that has a new voter approved local district tax rate increase effective on April 1, 2009, your overall tax rate increase will be higher. The combined statewide and district tax rates that apply as of April 1, 2009, are listed on the reverse side of the Special Notice, Sales and Use Tax Rate Increases on April 1, 2009. For more information about the additional new district tax rate increases, please see the Special Notice, New Tax Rates to Take Effect on April 1, 2009.

The temporary 1% tax rate increase will expire on either July 1, 2011, or July 1, 2012, depending upon whether voters approve the proposed Proposition 1A, Budget Stabilization Act, in a statewide election to be held May 19, 2009.

I read the bit where it expires on July 1 if we don’t approve it. But I don’t understand how they get to charge it from April 1 to July 1 without voter approval.

Oh jeez, it expired July 1 2012!!!! if we don’t vote for it. I thought all tax increases required voter approval?

That’s alright - most retailers have already raised their prices - and clueless clerks are telling people it’s due to the tax increase - you know, the one that hasn’t taken effect yet...

That sucks.

No tax is a good tax, but if we are looking for a silver lining, cigarette taxes go up also on April Fools day, which will save thousand of teenagers from becoming addicts.

9.75% in L.A. next month. Woo Hoo!!!

Already have changed shopping behavior to offset that tax increase.

Move out now. Libs, please go to Massachusetts and help them complete their demise. Conservatives, come to Colorado and help us do what Galt did...and also help us get rid of those Californians who came here earlier and are trying to ruin us.

If y’all got some shopping to do, especially on higher-priced items, do it before Wednesday. :-/

Gonna buy everything here in Virginia and take it home.

I can’t leave California now because of the housing and rental glut — my condo (which I have paid on time since inception) is now a millstone around my neck.

But California is going to get as little of my money as possible.

While I’m against smoking as you are, I don’t want to see more money going into the coffers (no pun intended) of Rob Reiner’s boondoggle which almost gave us universal pre-school (regardless of Prop 1d’s outcome this May 19).

Congratulations to Pico Rivera and South Gate. A nice 10.25% for the two of you. Dig deep now into those pockets.

I agree. The spending side, both with Rob Reiner and SCHIP are abominations and unsupportable.

But, I support less teenagers picking up the smoking habit. Econ 101. An increase in price leads to a decrease in demand.

Hey, cut that out!!! We have enough idiots already in the People’s Republic of Messachusetts (truthful spelling).
Leave us alone. Enough.
Try somewhere else. I hear the Kalahari Desert is very beautiful...lots of wildlife and pretty plants.

Article 13 Section 3 of the California State Constitution requires a two-thirds majority vote
by the legislature in order to pass any tax increases.

They did that during the budget process, thanks to a few turncoat Republicans who joined with Arnie and the Dems.
