So the US postal Service is not too big to fail, but GM is?

I went to my local PO to mail an overnight letter via Express Mail. Usually I do UPS RED but I was there anyway.

Clerk advises me that it would be $17.50 AND “delivery to that zip takes two days” - I was in a hurry so I agreed - It took THREE DAYS.

UPS would have delivered by noon for around $12.

We have 4 post offices with in 5 miles of the house. Close three of them. Keep the newer one for sorting and delivery, close the others. Saves over $1 million a year just in this small area.

Even my wife, who used to be paranoid about paying through the computer, is paying on line. I hardly ever buy stamps or mail letters any more. Most of the mail I get is bills or junk mail. Almost no one writes snail mail letters any more.

Your wrote:
I pay most of by bills online or over the phone, it is easier and just as safe. If it weren’t for junk mail and credit card offers I would only get 3-5 pieces of mail a month. It really has come to the point where if we didn’t have bulk and junk mail we could cut down to 1-2 days of delivery per week.

Ditto here. This is the future. The Post Office is a buggy whip.

Did you get your money back? I send to Chicago sometimes and what was guaranteed to be delivered the next day by noon took five days and I got a total refund. Package left OKC on time, it got to Chicago on time to the wrong zip and it took them four days to get it to the right zip several blocks away. I asked for a refund since they give me a time it is going to be delivered. UPS keeps raising rates and service goes down. Maybe I am adding to their deficit with getting refunds on Express Mail. It actually gets there faster with first class mail.

They were telling me at our local post office that you are not allowed to use certain type boxes to ship but they get those same boxes in all the time from NYC and Chicago. Clerk told me that Chicago has one of the worst postal systems in the Country.

The post office hasn’t come close to responding to the new way of exchanging information. The number of personal letter has gone way down as people now communicate electronically. Cut back the delivery of the mail(coupons and credit card apps. essentially) to five days a week to reflect the modern times.

You walk in and they seem to be doing us a favor by being there.

You ain't kiddin' there-- when there's a long line of customers waiting to step up to the counter, they don't work any faster, in fact they seem to slow down.

Sounds like they need a community organizer to get things into shape.

IMO, the USPS went down hill around the time Clinton’s “Welfare to Workforce” or whatever it was called was implemented.

You started the see the old military-veteran type, who was literate and had a work ethic replaced with...the opposite.

I saw a couple of these “Welfare to Workforce” letter carriers that I went to school with. Hopefully they grew up, but if their teen year mentality stuck with them, YIKES!

Um I don’t know why you pinged me in response but the staff behind the counter of my local post office have been there as long as I have around 15 years or so I doubt they were the result of welfare to work

I have wondered for years why we have Saturday delivery and not just Monday - Friday. They also need to give better service.

I'd rather have Tue - Sat mail delivery. Post Office don't deliver on MLK Day, Memorial Day, etc. which falls on Mondays.

Of course, “shall have Power to” is not synonymous with “must.”

I suspect that the authors of the Constitution put that in because they thought the private sector was incapable of running a postal service. Whether or not that was true back then, the private sector is certainly capable of running such a service today, and most probably in much better fashion that the government.

added to your comment. There is a long line and they declare out loud, it's their break time and they will be back in 20 minutes. The biggest blame to be given for this insensitivity is the union. They don't care about anything as long as they get their union dues every month.

$160K huh? My school district offered early retirement bonus of $15,000 - peanuts compared to USPS.
