The U.S. Postal Service will be cutting more than 3,000 jobs and offering nearly a quarter of its work force early retirement as part of its efforts to streamline operations amid the worsening economy, the agency said Friday.

The Postal Service said work force cutbacks will save the agency $100 million annually.
Among the job cuts are 1,400 district administrative staff positions and another 1,400 mail processing and management jobs nationwide. More than 500 employees will be out of a job with the closure of six district offices that house only administrative functions, the agency said.
The cuts will save the post office about $100 million annually, the agency said.
The post office ended its first quarter -- October 1 through December 31 -- with a net loss of $384 million caused by a drop in mail volume of 5.2 billion pieces. The 9.3 percent drop was the eighth consecutive quarter of volume declines, the agency said.
In late January, Postmaster General John E. Potter warned Congress that service cuts may be necessary, telling a Senate subcommittee that the agency may be forced to cut mail delivery from six to five days a week.
Modest, but it’s a start...
What did the Postal Service have in common with Imelda Marcus?
(old joke)
I can see the lakes and Walmarts getting very crowded on weekdays over the next year or two.
160K employees are eligible for regular retirement. 150K are being offered early retirement. Sounds like they are itching to get rid of nearly half their workforce (640K or so).
Obama is cutting defense and laying off skilled workers at defense contractors.
Obama is laying off thousands at the Post Office.
How can the top 3 points reconcile with the bottom 2 points? What is this man really doing?
I have wondered for years why we have Saturday delivery and not just Monday - Friday. They also need to give better service.
I'm told the USPS makes most of ts money from junk mail, which may decrease in the downturn, but at 42c a letter, Ist Class must be suffering as well. Now it's going up another 2c in May. I have several routine bills I still pay by snailmail for no particular reason, but they're going to go electronic soon. 44c a letter is way dumb to pay when you can send it free through the ether.
wow!
i can’t wait. /s
the economy run by the feds like the (privatized),
union, democrat-controlled usps.
Here is a “talking point” for the MSM: the USPS is losing millions of taxpayer dollars and yet management continues to receive large contractual BONUSES. Spread the word.
Me too!!!!
I hope they fire the woman who delivers the mail on my regular mailman’s days off. After she delivers the neighbors get together to re distribute it to the correct people. I even found a book from Amazon.com laying out on my drive way.
One of our neighbors works for the postal service. His wife told us that if you work for the ps for 6 yrs they can’t fire you. If they want to get rid of you they have to find you another government job. She was really happy that they aren’t having to worry about him losing his job.
its fitting we use the post office a lot and its really sad when you know the rules and regs better than the reps behind the counter
No More Junk Mail!
The Post Office had absolutely no idea about what it was doing in those days. I doubt much has changed since. I pulled so many empty trailers, and I bob tailed (Tractor pulling no trailer) so many times that I lost count after it came into the dozens of occurrences.
The USPS semi-Federal employees of the USPS actually fancy themselves as management exploited workers. I got to read all of their BS worker information boards while I was compelled to stand around for countless hours waiting for them to release my fully loaded trailer of third class mail because it had to leave at an exact time according to the ridiculous schedules.
I could tell lots of stories about the inept USPS if I had a mind to.
The only reason that i ever worked for them was because my real management job considered it a conflict of interest for me to moonlight with any competitors. Therefore, I drove big rigs for a monopoly that had no credible competition. It is illegal to compete with the Post Office.
Cry me a river Postal hacks.
I could manage a delivery service that would be prompt seven days a week with the resources that the Government has.
Really though, I have no strong opinions on the matter.
