California corrections officials announced today that they will seek to have more paroled and deported undocumented immigrants who return to the state illegally transferred into federal custody.
The result would be potentially longer prison terms for the offenders and a reduction in the state's average daily prison population by 1,000 - a cost savings to the state of $10 million a year, according to California corrections chief Matthew Cate.
"When they return across the border, we are finding that far too often, rather than being prosecuted for the federal crime of returning as a felon, they are being instead revoked on parole for a short term," Cate said at a press conference.
Cate said the paroled and deported returnees will face federal terms of up to 10 years in custody, as opposed to the short parole violation stints that put them behind bars for terms of four to eight months.
The parole policy change comes as the state corrections agency has been told by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to reduce its spending this year by $400 million. ...
Cate said the state spends $970 million a year to imprison undocumented convicts but only receives $110 million back from Washington on that score.
