As someone who has both taught Public Speaking and been a member of Toastmasters, I know a little something about how to craft a decent presentation and give a speech. It is frustating to see how many people, even here in FR, have fallen for the idea that histrionics is good speechifying.
My students and the members of Toastmasters with a little experience, could give a better speech than Obama. Two of the first things you learn in Public Speaking is
a) Don't READ your speech. Give it
b) Look your audience in the eye.
Certainly, it is hard to give 60 minute speech from memory (Though Castro could go on for hours impromptu), but Obambi has a very annoying habit of twitching his head from one teleprompter to the other - It's like watching somone who is watching tennis match.
In fact I didn't have a drinking word last night, I drand on "teleprompter switch" and was sloshed in the first four minutes.
Obambi never once looked at the camera (meaning at US, the American citizen) undoubtedly because this genious orator thought he'd lose his place or his train of thought.
The other annoying bit about Obambi is his rising inflection when he wants to sound strong. I can only recall one time when Reagan raised his voice, and that was to ask Gorbachov to "tear down this wall." Other than that one time, Reagan's greatest speeches were folksy and low key, letting the rhythm of the words give the tone.
Many here were disappointed by Jindal's presentation last night, but there is no reason for that. He did appear a bit nervous at first, and the audio feed was exacrable, but the content of the speech was straight conservative.
He looked us in the eye as he spoke, and spoke calmly and with conviction. When you are confident that you are right, you don't need to raise your voice.
Beware of letting the MSM keep the score card on oratory. These people live off confrontational television in which yelling and screaming are highly prized.
Those of us who know different prize other things.
I am no expert on speeches like you, so I defer on that.
I also couldn’t take it and didn’t watch either for long.
But Obama looked strong and Jidal looked weak, young, and amatuerish.
That’s all it takes.
For the record, Jidal is an intellectual stud and a good man. If only he looked and sounded like Romney (whom I despise, but he LOOKS the part) or Fred Thompson (when Fred was on fire), he’d be Ronald Reagan.
Jindal needs to get a speaking coach and work on a deep voice.
Jindal needs to hit Gold’ gym and do Olympic lifts. Eat.
Lose the striped tie.
Get a Marine hair cut.
Stiupid things, but about 90% of TV is appearance.
There is. Bet even Jindal himself knows that it could have been far better on both substance and style. It fell flat with most Freepers commenting on it. We were an audience with sympathy for him and his positions. How do you think it resonated with other audiences?
Don't worry too much. His prime time will come in some years. This speech was a bad start, which didn't derail, but only delayed him.
“”The other annoying bit about Obambi is his rising inflection when he wants to sound strong.””
Besides the existence of the man himself, this is the MOST annoying and irritating trait of any talking he does. He emphasizes the last word of every sentence or as they say, “on the UP”. I absolutely CANNOT listen to him at all anymore. Why would I want to be annoyed? It’s like listening to someone scraping their nails on a blackboard or someone sitting and tearing at their toenails.
What you said...
Markets didn’t like 0’s speech.
Saw a comment here the other day that made sense regarding Obama’s side-to-side head turning.
The theory is that it’s a defense mechanism to minimize the viewer seeing both his ears (and how big they are) for any appreciable length of time.
Could be, the guy’s a really vain dude. IMHO, of course.
I did not hear Governor Jindal’s speech but did read a transcript. I thought that his combination of conservative principles and optimism was inspiring and reminded me of Reagan.
The republicans continue to rebuff science. Science is the difference between the US and 3rd world countries. Jesus isn’t the difference.
80% of the US wealth is technology releated (intellectual property and knowledge).
Once again, our wealth is not because of Jesus or conservative principles, but because of our knowledge of science and skills in technology and engineering.
The republicans continue to stake out a claim in the 16th century for themselves and once again disappoint.
Pathetic.
Jindal's speech still seemed a bit to "soft" and didn't have any ferocity with it.
WTH are you babbling about?
Democrats in power = The biggest example of Munchausen by proxy in world history.
I didnt realize Bobby was giving his response from the Mount...
I agree with you. All it takes is to return to the JFK Nixon Debates. On radio 60% of the people said Nixon won easily, but on TV the numbers were more then reversed.
Jindal had the deer in the headlights look. Something Sarah Palin did not have at the RNCC in September. I don’t think she should have given last night’s response and Jindal was the obvious choice, but the kid needs more seasoning. You have to play in at least AA before you can thrive in The Show.
It was very intellectually sound and conservative, on paper.
On paper.
Jindal speech would have been OK in 1997 or 1998, but not now.
Markets didnt like 0s speech.
This always makes me wonder how that is possible. I remember vividly that people would say the same thing when he spoke on the campaign, but he still won. When McCain spoke, many times the market increased. I understand what you are saying, but not sure if it adds up or is realistic. However, if I am wrong, please explain to me so I have a better understanding.
Wrong! The real difference between the United States, at least in its first 175 years, and all other countries is FREEDOM. Our science and technology flourished because of our entrepreneurship built on FREEDOM. Our economy flourished because of economic FREEDOM. The one thing that made the U.S. great is being extinguished by it's political leaders with the acquiescence of it's citizens.
You are right on one point, it is pathetic.
Obama is strong. He's the POTUS. Jindal IS weak, young, and amateurish. He's a first term governor.
If only he looked and sounded like Romney (whom I despise, but he LOOKS the part)
Some would say Romney is too well coifed, too slick. Ingenuine.
or Fred Thompson (when Fred was on fire),
When was that? In the early 80s on film? Show me anytime Fred was on fire in this century? Fred was AWFUL.
hed be Ronald Reagan.
Ronald Reagan was one of the alltime great salesmen. He had natural gifts--good looks, a friendly smile, and an ability to gain your trust. You don't get that by adjusting the tone of your voice. I'm sure Ronnie worked his craft, but he had natural gifts that Jindal simply doesn't have.
Jindal needs to get a speaking coach and work on a deep voice.Jindal needs to hit Gold gym and do Olympic lifts. Eat.Lose the striped tie.Get a Marine hair cut.
How about Jindal just being himself to the best of his ability, and letting the chips fall? He can't pretend to be a world leader if he isn't one. Let him be.
