Man kills himself in Schuller's Crystal Cathedral
The body of an apparent suicide victim is loaded into a coroner's van at televangelist Robert H. Schuller's GARDEN GROVE, Calif. A man shot and killed himself in front of a cross inside televangelist Robert H. Schuller's Crystal Cathedral on Wednesday, police and church officials said. The man handed a note and his driver's license to two ushers, walked to the cross and then shot himself in the head as he appeared to be praying, Senior Pastor Juan Carlos Ortiz said.
The man's identity was not released, but police Lt. Dennis Ellsworth said the man was in his 40s. Church spokesman Mike Nason said there was no record of the man at the cathedral.
Betty Spicer, a volunteer usher at the famous sanctuary, said she greeted the man when he entered. She said he handed her a folded note with two cards inside as the man told her: "You may want this

didn’t someone else do this a few years ago....a church employee i believe...
“didnt someone else do this a few years ago....a church employee i believe...”
Correct.
I was thinking .... ANOTHER ONE!
Bizarre. Makes me think of the X-files.
I know of no more selfish act than this. It is the ultimate.
I’m a little surprised to see Schuller refered to as a “televangelist”. I think of him more like a motivational speaker.
Suicide is utterly SELFISH and COWARDLY.
They ONLY think of themselves and ESCAPE the problem by taking their life. Suicide disgusts me.
“I think of him more like a motivational speaker.”
The term, “false prophet” also springs to mind.
Did he break any glass?
Schuller turned the Cathedral over to his son to lead, but then took it back causing a church split and a lot of complaints over the past few years...don’t know how it came out now. Sorry to hear this.
Sad. RIP.
Guess in this case, he wasn't motivational enough.
Huh? Why?
LOL
I believe you’re right. Seems like it was a music director.
We like to worship there when we go to southern California. It’s a beautiful cathedral. And the organ is absoltuely awesome! They recently (in the last several years) connected the Epistle and the Gospel organs to the main organ in the front and there’s another organ in the back balcony, all of which can be played from the manual at the main organ.
When the organist plays Bach’s Great Fugue at the processional and cranks up the organs, it is something to behold!

Yeah, we’re better off without them!
What is selfish? They let him come and end his life at the foot of the cross, where he wished to be. They weren't selfish at all.
I think many people would be surprised how many suicides are conducted kneeling in prayer and/or clasping a Bible.
Kinda puts the lie to "...God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." (I Cor 10:13b)
Unfortunately, many people have found that the saying "God wont give you more than you can handle" is merely an Old Wives' Tale. But even sadder is the way society would rather spout homilies than accept and support those who don't find this temporal existence worthwhile.
:-)
Because it’s strange that two people have killed themselves in this place. It sounds like an X-files episode to me.
Yes. He was head of the musicians. I knew him when I lived in so cal.
Although some accounts of the events at Masada....say that there were pacts to kill each other...and the last "man" standing would take his own life. Thus there was only "one" suicide???
Personally it's very tough to think of that type of scenario..but it would all depend on the immediate circumstances....Wouldn't it?
