Slow Obama stance on Iran nukes worries Israel

Israeli officials are putting together a position paper on talks between the United States and Iran for the new administration in Washington, Israeli officials say. The paper will include a list of reservations about the state of international efforts against Iran's nuclear program. One worry is that negotiations will go on for too long.

The paper states that talks between the United States and Iran should be limited to a short period of time. It also recommends that harsh sanctions be imposed against the Islamic Republic if negotiations fail.

U.S. President Barack Obama, who appointed envoys to the Middle East and Afghanistan within days of his inauguration, has not done so with Iran. An Israeli official in Jerusalem told Haaretz that "this procrastination is very disconcerting."

Israel and several leading countries in the European Union are concerned about the delay in formulating a U.S. policy on Iran's nuclear program.

About two weeks ago, senior diplomats from the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany met in Berlin to discuss developments on the Iranian front. According to a senior official in Jerusalem, the European delegates were "severely disappointed" by what the American delegate, Under Secretary of State William Burns, had to say.

The official said that when Burns was asked when the United States would forge a final policy on the Iranian issue, he said the matter was being examined and that the process would take about two months. The French, German and British delegates said they were disappointed to hear this and that "the process must be hurried along," according to the official.

He said the French delegates favored an approach whereby talks with Iran would offer Tehran a "one-shot" option. They added that if the American position took two months to formulate, it was advisable to postpone them

So Israel wants Hussein to work in the best interests of the US, Israel and the world at large against a thug, whack-job nation and the criminal murdering class which runs it. Sounds pretty damned unreasonable to me!

Frankly, the window of opportunity has closed. This might have been done with Bush in the White House, but now it’s too late, with Obama in the White House.

Nobody but those involved, and maybe not even all of them, knows why the delay. Why didn’t Israel and the US take out the Iran nuke sites already?

Maybe part of it was first Sharon and then Kadima, who advised against it, preferring more negotiations. Certainly part of it was the Europeans and the US leftists, who did everything they could to demonize Bush and prevent him from acting. Maybe it was Bush himself who decided to wait.

Now, it seems likely that Israel must act alone, and against the united opposition of, basically, the entire world, with the exception of maybe a few countries like Poland and the Czech Republic, who are not in a position to help. That means that the job can’t be thoroughly done, because Israel lacks the means to do it without U.S. help.

It certainly is a dismal situation. I have thought for some time that Bush should have acted at least four years ago, but for some reason, after invading Iraq, decided to ease up and take no further initiatives against the obvious targets of Syria and Iran.

Obama is now in the process of allying with Syria and Iran.

What did people expect from the guy that voted PRESENT in the IL Legislature on anything of importance — ZERO couldn’t make up his mind then so why did anyone think becoming President he would change. He only works a short week and takes a 3-day vacation in his first month.

He seems to really not like being at “home” in the WH. I read what they said about Camp David- it sounds as if they didin’t like that too much either. They are just so out of place and I think they are feeling it. Obama loves being a big shot, but deep down is very uncomfortable with his new life. He’s a thug and thugs don’t fit in honorable places. He seems like a candidate for a break down in my opinion.

“The ghosts of REAL American Presidents are haunting this thug.”

That’s exactly what I meant, but couldn’t quite put my finger on how to say it.

Leave him alone. He has to ensure that Farahkan, Ayers and code pink are on board with the policy. He can’t just spend all of his political capital on a “tiny” country. This site is not being fair to Kabama; We knew he wouldn’t be ready on day one. Some thought by month 1 he might be but obviously he needs a bit more time. What’s the worst that can happen anyways...

Was just wondering about this myself. It may be an incorrect conclusion but it sounds at times like he wanted to play President. Now that he sees what the job is about, he doesn’t seem to want it.

I’ve never heard any President complain about the job of President before.
Until now.

I agree 100% about the breakdown. He is WAY over his head and his constant rhetoric with nothing to back it up cannot last forever as members of the media are already slowly getting disenchanted. Word in Chicago is that he was NEVER able to take any criticism so I think it is all going to get to him. I think ZERO likes the trappings of President but not the responsibility and it is already starting to get to him so he escapes outside the WH.

Damn give zer0 a break. He’s tired and bored. He was at Camp David weekend before last, Chicago for the past 4 days, busy getting his pay to play players paid off with the *stimulus* bill. He had to travel to Fl and IN to talk to the sheep. When is he supposed to deal with foreign affairs? That’s not his thing. He is a community organizer. Besides, he likes Iran.
