Wait ‘til they get unionized, or maybe this is in anticipation of that. Or under a later obammy order, layoffs will be forbidden.
This government has it in for Walmart. The so-called Free Choice Act will force them to unionize. It’s all downhill from there. They may be trying to immunize themselves from too much damage. You have to do what you have to do to protect the business and still provide jobs at all.
This goes hand in hand with today’s passing of the “stimulus” bill.
800? That’s it? It’s almost like they laid 800 slackers off just so Walmart could join the layoff party.
That’s gotta be less than the normal attrition rate. By tomorrow, they’ll probably be up employees.

Seriously, though, literally THOUSANDS employed by WM here; and thousands employed as a result of those thousands of WM workers.
One reason a lot of big box retailers don’t do well here is, everyone’s running around with one of those 10% discount cards from WM...
The 10% discount card at Walmart is the equivalent of a Sam’s Club card (same company) for most products. Except the Sam’s Club card costs $50 a year.
Yeah, whats the big deal. This should only affect maybe 1800 people if you include their families etc.

I don’t get this. WM is hiring managers and assistant store managers. weird
It won’t be long before cashiers are replaced with automated checkout scanners and all items are implanted with hidden sensors to go off as shoppers leave the store to detect unpaid merchandise.
It also won’t be long before machines take over in most industry sectors to offset the cost of manual labor. Either that or the demand for illegal cheap labor will skyrocket which will in effect destroy the unions and depress wages even further. This ultimately is the goal of Democrats; complete control, power and dependency at the expense of quality of life.
Wal-Mart employs 1.8 million associates worldwide and more than 1.3 million in the United States.

Wal-Mart to downsize at corporate headquarters

FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is downsizing at its corporate headquarters in Arkansas, cutting 700 to 800 jobs, but will add jobs in other areas and to work at new stores, according to published reports.
The positions being eliminated are in merchandising, real estate, marketing and support divisions in its Wal-Mart U.S. division and in Sam’s Club merchandising unit, according to the memo.
“While the number of associates that will be impacted by the restructuring is very small compared to the 2.2 million associates we have worldwide, I can assure you that we will treat them with care and dignity and help support them during their transition, consistent with our basic beliefs and respect for the individual,” Duke said.
Additionally, Duke said Wal-Mart will create new management jobs as part of the company’s overall expansion plan and plans to “add thousands of jobs in our stores and clubs this year.”

A huge company like Walmart that employees and estimated 1.5 million employees laying off only 800 people means they probably did lay off 800 slackers.
The first to go are the lower performing employees that are effectively paid to clock in and clock out with no or poor productivity in between. That’s those 800 Walmart employees. As mentioned above probably getting rid of them before it’s illegal to fire them.
Very true. Wal-Mart is a pioneer in the use of RFID - sensor tags embedded in product. In the not so distant future customers will simply run their cart through a sensing device which will ring up every item in the cart. The customer will swipe her/his debit or credit card and leave. The result $200 million in payroll savings as the clerks at the registers are replaced by machines. Just like the airlines did a few years ago.
Another benefit to Wal-Mart is quick detection of theft. If an item leaves the store without being paid for, security is electronically notified as the product leaves the store.
Suppliers beware also. Once this is implemented Wal-Mart will likely move to consigned inventory. The company will pay the vendor when it receives payment from the customer. Inventory is a huge cost for a retailer. Wal-Mart will be in a position to eliminate inventory carrying costs and shrink.
Just think, tens of thousands of American jobs eliminated and they won’t be going to China!

I can live with that as I use self check-out at Walmart and Homeland grocery. Then I can bag my items like I want. Most of the checkers throw things around which irritates me to no end. Target has much better checkers here.
And that probably doesn’t include their drivers, their Sam’s Club associates, nor their wholly-owned subsidiaries such as McLeans, their pre-packaged food-products wholesaler.
They are probably cutting pre holiday help. I am sure they should be punished for some reason though.
