California farms, vineyards in peril from warming, U.S. energy secretary warns

'We're looking at a scenario where there's no more agriculture in California,' Steven Chu says. He sees education as a means to combat threat. By Jim Tankersley

February 3, 2009 Reporting from Washington -- California's farms and vineyards could vanish by the end of the century, and its major cities could be in jeopardy, if Americans do not act to slow the advance of global warming, Secretary of Energy Steven Chu said Tuesday.

In his first interview since taking office last month, the Nobel-prize-winning physicist offered some of the starkest comments yet on how seriously President Obama's cabinet views the threat of climate change, along with a detailed assessment of the administration's plans to combat it.

Chu warned of water shortages plaguing the West and Upper Midwest and particularly dire consequences for California, his home state, the nation's leading agricultural producer.

In a worst case, Chu said, up to 90% of the Sierra snowpack could disappear, all but eliminating a natural storage system for water vital to agriculture.

Al Gore got a Nobel prize too. Big deal. Pay attention to what is actually happening in the climate instead of what your agenda driven, Al Gore inspired cronies are pushing. An ice age is a lot more likely. That will reduce agricultural output, but for a very different reason. The sun is still devoid of sunspots...as it has been for most of 2008.

And this guy WON the Nobel Peace prize? I shook my head in disbelief then I remembered Al Gore getting one as well, so it’s as relevant as a pile of dogsh*t. Another one of gore’s mindless minions of glo-bull warming.

California has more immediate problems, like they are as bankrupt as the banks. This will drive people out of the state to find work and reduce their carbon foot print.

"How embarrassing to see a scientist degrade himself for political expediency..."

It's Carol "International Socialist" Browner who is Clinate & Energy Czar Energy, Interior, EPA etc all report to her. She needed no confirmation.

The International Socialists' manifesto aims to decrease the GDPs of developed countries through green/socialist regulations.

Let California return to nature, especially in the south, a desert. No more importing of water.

Millions of years ago this planet was hot and moist, and guess what plants did back then? They grew like crazy. That's what plants do when it's warm.

In a worst case, Chu said, up to 90% of the Sierra snowpack could disappear, all but eliminating a natural storage system for water vital to agriculture.

The water does not disappear. If the snow pack evaporates then rains start. Furthermore, warm oceans will evaporate more water than they do today, so if, as a mental exercise, we assume this "global warming" to be true then we'd only return to the old Earth that was so good for millions of species.

could vanish by the end of the century

It becomes a popular theme these days - promise doom but at some far, far future. This way you need to pay now, but you can't hold anyone responsible if the fraud is revealed.

“..a scenario where there's no more agriculture in California”

There's also the possibility
a) California slides in the Pacific(no California at all)
b) America's a smouldering heap of ashes from Atomic warfare
c) Yellowstone's Calderon explodes,America's a smouldering heap of ashes
d) Asteroid hitting earth
e) Jesus Coming
f) Or freezing our (wal) nuts off because of Global Cooling.
g) none of the above and life continues....

I'm betting on the latter....

This is a constant and natural process. Once upon a time there were orange groves in Georgia. Climate change, cooling as it were, caused the citrus zone to move gradually into southern Florida since the 1800s.
