An interesting video showing the operation of an openbolt .22 singleshot homemade pistol. It appears pretty wellmade to me.

I have always thought that an open bolt .22 would be the simplest of all modern guns to make.

I don’t get the purpose of an open bolt single shot. There’s no magazine in this pistol, and it isn’t fully automatic, so there is no reason for an open bolt.

Firing from an open bolt reduces accuracy due to the bolt movement prior to firing. The only reason to fire from an open bolt is when in fully automatic and there is a danger of cookoff inherent in the design.

Some rifles are open bolt auto/ closed bolt semi-auto selectable.

Open bolt guns are extremely easy to make. There are far fewer parts than any other home made type gun that uses modern ammunition. An open bolt gun automatically ejects the fired case, reducing reloading time, and important plus for a single shot pistol.

bolts open, pull the trigger, bolt stays open, drop another round in.
a fixed firing pin open bolt can be a bit lighter I imagine than one with a spring loaded firing pin designed for semi use.

Okay, its late at night and I'm in bed. An intruder enters my house so I jump up and run over to a table or dresser and bang the handle three or four times on the table and then I'm ready to take on the intruder. Now, I better hit him between the eyes on the one and only shot I'm going to get. Real handy.

Might I pick the brains of a few of you gun lovers out there. Taurus has a new pistol out called the “Judge” . It holds five shells and shoots 45 longs AND 410 shotgun shells. Here is the question. It is against the law to have a 410 (or any shotgun) with a barrel less than 18 inches. How could this pistol be legal in any state??

Because is is a pistol. You cannot saw off the barrel of a shotgun to less than 18", but there is no law prohibiting the firing of shot shells from a handgun.

You can buy shotshells for almost any handgun chambering, but it is the unique fact that a .45 Colt and a .410 shotgun shell share the same diameter that allows the Judge to work.

It has a rifled barrel so in that respect, its not a shotgun

OK, ease of manufacture for a homemade handgun makes sense. Thanks.

I believe the banging on the table was to show that the cartridge would not be disloged and that the safety worked.

Most of the time guns are used for defense, they are not even fired.

The allies made a single shot pistol during WWII to be dropped to the resistance. It was called the “Liberator”. The CIA made a similar pistol during the Vietnam war. It was called the Deer Hunter. It used a screw on barrel to load each shot and had no sights. It took much longer to reload.

A Thompson M1A1 fires from an open bolt. There isn’t even a firing pin, just a nipple machined in the face of the bolt. By the way, I understand that in some states it isn’t legal to own an open bolt semi-auto. The state considers it to be a machine gun, while the feds won’t register it because it really isn’t!

A friend of mine had a 410 pistol. I don't remember if it was made by Winchester or Remington but it was old but worked well. It was a factory gun made in the old days and the barrel was about 10 inches. He always thought it was illegal but according to you, it would be a legal gun.

I was wrong about the CIA name. It was not “Deer Hunter” it was “Deer gun”. Here is a link to an article about it:

This link has pictures of the Liberator and the OSS stinger, two more single shot pistols used in warfare.

I just did a little research and the pistol was a break open 410 pistol by J. Stevens with a 12 Inch barrel.

If it was made before the 1934 National Firearms Act, it might be grandfathered in.

I am sure that other experts here could clarify that for you.

I’m reminded of the old fashioned zip gun, but this one is prettier.

I think that Stevens pistol was one of several made back when that were unrifled and illegal today.

My problem with the video is that the first cartridge appear to have been fired by the banging on the handle. Look at the dent in the rim when it is set back down.
