Opinion: Michael Steele, Black, Pro-Life Catholic Takes the Helm of the G.O.P.

Perhaps this articulate, dedicated Catholic Christian and loyal family man is just the recipe needed to bring some leaven to that old dying loaf. Of course, my positions on many issues have not fit the litmus test of the voices in that Party who think the “solution” is some return to a kind of knee jerk “conservatism”. After all the very word “conservative” is becoming almost a chameleon in its usage these days. Some who use the term mean fiscal and economic conservatism alone. Oh they try to throw a bone now and again to what they call “social conservatives”. In reality, I think they want to jettison people like me who had to leave the Democratic Party when its leaders turned their back on the poorest of the poor, children in the womb. I left that Party when they lost their moral integrity and right to claim that they care about the poor. I have often called myself a “Reluctant Republican”. Maybe Michael Steele can help take away some of my reluctance.

I welcome Michael Steele’s new leadership of the G.O.P. Most of all I hope he strongly challenges the growing disregard for the poorest of the poor, children in the first home of the whole human race, in that Party. I also hope that he continues to open up the tent if by that expression he means embracing and encouraging a fresh new coalition. I have longed for the day when both major Parties start from the foundation of all true social justice by recognizing in both of their platforms that the first right is the right to life and without it there are no other rights. Maybe that day will come.

The Republican Party has imploded. It is in need of leadership which can inspire it to become once again the Party of Lincoln and stand up for a true new birth of freedom that includes the freedom to be born.

A “pro-choice” Catholic is not a Catholic. Or, he is deaf and can’t read what the Pope puts out.

If he is now the Captain of that ship he oughta make McCain walk the plank and run up the Stars and Stripes.

Compassionate Conservatism was anything but a huge success; I see no need to revisit it in the future.

I guess I’m not that up on where Steele fits in on the policy spectrum, and I’m not certain it matters too much anyway; the RNC chairman primarily works behind the scenes planning electoral strategy. A moderate (i.e. less principled and more pragmatic) is probably a better candidate for the job anyway; while the place we need strong and principled conservaitve leadership is in the House and Senate.

I have often called myself a “Reluctant Republican”. -

While registered as a republican, I am not one.
I am an American. I vote for the person that is most likely or more inclined to serve America and Americans rather then the democrat political party or the republican political party. Unfortunately far too many Americans vote for all the wrong reasons. Political Party, skin color, some single personal issue. This is how the Country ends up having Pelosi as House Leader and Obama as the President.
Unfortunately with our system there is no requirement for intelligence to cast a ballot, In fact little is required including proving you are alive in many cases... So the Country gets what these people vote for and in many case that is a empty suit or worse.

the very word “conservative” is becoming almost a chameleon in its usage these days.

I'll give it a try: "CR" for Constitutional Republic (& by default that means original intent in constitutional law, laissez-faire free-market economy, and biblical values of life, liberty, and opportunity).

Well, the liberals can no longer legitimately play the “race card” in dealing with the republican party. Maybe all these people’s guilt will finally be assuaged.

leave the Democratic Party when its leaders turned their back on the poorest of the poor, children in the womb.

Pretty much the Rats are against anything pro human. Their view of humans is that they are useful for the acquisition of power and wealth, and gaining that, people have no further value.

This explains why genocide only occurs in extreme socialist environments.

This Deacon sounds like he would be gleeful to vote for a socialist, as long as that socialist were against abortion. That seems to be the case with a number of his ilk. That is why I have never been comfortable fighting with this sort on my side.

I wish we were free to vote for the best individual regardless of party affiliation; unfortunately the leadership in the democratic party is so corrupt I feel there is no choice but the keep them out of power and THAT allows the GOP to become corrupt in it’s own way. Two STRONG parties is the only hope for our country and I don’t see that in our future.

Michael Steele is an excellent Pro-LIFE choice!!

Perhaps he is not the most dogmatic conservative.

But his relative youth, passion, and yes ... him being African American will put the GOP in much better play better than any of the other choices.

The GOP got demolished in recent years because the MSM successfully made the craggly face of McCain and GWB as the proto-typical conservative Republican. (plus both Bush and McCain are word-fumbling bores)

Steele will prove once and for all (not that WE needed convincing ...) that the GOP principals are for all people, and that Republican leaders can actually be articulate and exciting.

Legitimately or no, they will most certainly continue playing the race card. Why should they stop? It’s been an incredibly effective ploy for them, and there’s never motivation to abandon what works. I fully expect racialists like Rev. Jackson to get even worse than they already are from here on out.

I just know that I am going to get totally flamed for this but, IMO the republican party needs to not have the anti-abortion as their foremost foundation of the party. It needs to be one of the “top five” pillars of the tent but not the center pole.

1. fiscal conservatism
2. open and honest government
3. right to life
4. social conservatism where govt is held accountable
5. market driven economy with very slight regulation to prevent the mess we are currently enjoying

I just think that reshuffling our priorities would win us elections that we so desperately need. If we do nothing we will get nowhere, and that deeply frustrates me. I think that Michael Steele will be the type of leader that may be able to get this done.
